Absolutely agreed. I found a number of similarities between the two, but I thought Transformers pulled things off where Die Hard sank.

Saw TRANSFORMERS Sunday night in a sold-out (!) theatre in suburban Virginia.
The film is, well, it's exactly what it is -- a self-aware summer blockbuster that makes fun of itself in every scene yet delivers on the action. The crowd adored it -- I kept thinking if this had been a test screening or something, Michael Bay would be giving high fives! -- and I have to admit, as idiotic as the whole thing was, I kinda liked it too. I know of the toys, but not much more than that they existed. I'd imagine, though, that fans of a certain age must be awestruck when Optimus Prime and Megatron and the others -- I don't remember their names -- show up. My only real complaint? The transformations themselves were so CGI-fast that it looked like a blur rather than the Rubik's Cube delight of the original designs. Director Bay, in an interview somewhere, maybe WIZARD, said he had to convince hardcore Transformer fans that the blocky transformations of the toys and cartoons just wouldn't be realistic onscreen today. Some transformations had 10,000 movements, he said. Still, it was too much of a blur, the unfoldings. Funny also that Transformers and decepticons seem only to be able to take over GM cars and trucks!! Final question: What city were they supposed to be in at the end. It's not Vegas, not L.A. (or is it?), not Phoenix and yet they seem to say it;s only 20 miles from Hoover Dam. It seemed a generic dying East Coast downtown somehow out West, but maybe I'm just missing it. WAS it a real city? All in all, more than meets the eye! david |

It's unquestionably downtown Los Angeles, but I have no idea how they got here from Hoover Dam in twenty minutes.

There's a Mission City in Kansas. They couldn't get there from Hoover Dam in twenty minutes either.

In the movie Cpt. Lennox (Josh Duhamel) want them to fall back 22 miles to Mission City with the cube. I'm under the impression that this was a made up city for the movie.

I saw this last night and thought it was just okay. My complaints mirror those already stated in other posts. I thought the human actors were very good, Shia especially pulled off his part with lots of charm.
The movie was too high-testosterone for me. With EVERY SINGLE GOVERNMENT AND POLICE AGENT playing p*ssing contests with citizens and each other (I actually thought it was appropriate when one of the Autobots peed on John Turturro), there were moments when I was waiting for the roof to collapse and crush them all. Finally, giant robots battle US troops, jets and each other, blowing up buildings, smashing cars, etc. in a city as the residents flee for their lives, and we're expected to believe that the government can cover the entire thing up? That's the most ridiculous thing I've been told to believe since the War of the Worlds TV show (which was a sequel to the movie) said the governments of the world managed to cover up the Martian invasion--successfully! Over 152 million bucks in the U.S. and a quarter of a billion world wide for TRANFORMERS opening week. Yep, doing a ominous giant and robotic-looking Galactus in the new Fantastic Four movie would have been stupid. Kids today (and adults) just can't go for that kind of old-fashioned Kirby crap. Thank the stars the Fox producers of FF are such smart and safe visionaries.

I probably have no right to say this, as my kids may yet drag me to this movie, but I can't imagine paying this kind of money to watch a re-imagined cartoon show. Is this the best Hollywood has to offer? Is the nostalgia for these shows what fueled such unprecedented box office numbers or did I miss something? All I can think is BAD BOYS II: WITH ROBOTS.

Wife and I saw it this morning (9:15am first showing). Both of us thought it was fun but a tad too long. The criticism I've read centers on the human actors -- they're too dull; they cause the film to grind to a halt -- but I had no difficulty with any of the stars as far as pacing went. The first half of the film was the better part, particularly that opening in the Qatar desert. Very nice cinematography. All said, a worthy expenditure of $5 (each).

Quote: Well, top cut the studios and folks some slack (for some reason), I don't think I ever saw a statement from them saying that was why they didn't do an actual Galactus. It was just speculation from the people, such as myself. But I never saw a quote from Tim Story or anybody saying nobody would buy into a real Galactus. |

Ya know I saw this movie last week and was not really impressed with it. Sure there are a few fun action sequences and an awful lot of big names on the bill but in the end it is a typical Michael Bay film. By that I mean a lot of explosions and one-liners and almost no attention to storytelling, screenplay, depth, etc. I actually decided not to go near this film until DVD but a random decision on a first date lead to seeing it. The upside is that the date went extremely well - and if things get serious I'll forever remember Transformers with fond memories - no matter how bad the film is. :D

Just saw it, kinda loved it. And I say that as someone who hates Michale Bay almost as much as any other right-thinking person. This movie is very much a star
exhibit in defence of CGI. I thought it was seamless, and at times breathtaking.

I know I'm waaaaayyyy in the minority, but I hated this movie (finally caught it on cable last night). (Didn't like the TV cartoons
either, even though I wrote about a dozen episodes of the original series -- did it strictly for the $$$.) Watching the movie was to me like being trapped
inside a video game for a couple hours. Half the time I couldn't tell what was going on, which robot was which, why characters were doing things, etc. And
the robots looked to me like ambulatory metal-salvage dumps that moved way too fast considering their size. My main thought during the final battle was
"Isn't this EVER going to end?!" Just an endless stream of CGI effects that looked to me like just what they were -- CGI effects. Just a lot of
sensory overkill. This isn't a movie I'll be watching a second time.

Watching the movie was to me like being trapped inside a video game for a couple hours. Warning: SPEED RACER is much >more< like that. The first time I saw TRANSFORMERS, on a big screen in a theater, I enjoyed it more than I expected to. The second time, on home video, I reacted pretty much as you did, including the "is this ever going to END?" reaction. However, IRON MAN is worth seeing--in a theater. |
