It's been a downhill slide after this "fire-cracker" for director Joe Johnston.

Mark me down as liking JPIII a lot more than the horrible second film. Johnston trimmed the running time while making a fun little B-picture. And I am a huge ROCKETEER fan! Disney just has to put this out in a special edition one of these days -- don't they?

Thanks

The moment we heard that Jeff Goldblum's daughter was cut from the gymnastics team near the beginning of the film, I knew we would be treated to (tortured with) a sequence where those same gymnastics skills saved her. Lots of groans and eye rolling from the audience when that inevitable scene showed up. The film could have used less of that, and more of the scene that was deleted showing the big game hunter, Roland Tembo (Pete Postlethwaite) and his longtime friend, Sidhu (Harvey Jason), in Africa. Tembo looks back on his career and realizes how unsportsmanlike his life has been, and also comes to the aid of a girl being sexually harassed. It really fleshes out his character into someone more sympathetic, in spite of his flaws. In the theatrical release, Tembo comes across as just one in a long line of big game hunters, and Sidhu's death has no meaning and comes across as just a throw-away moment. I didn't hate JPII, but felt it should have been a film more worth waiting for (and could still be improved, with some simple revisions in the editing room). Spielberg usually gives us cause to care for the characters, and I think that got lost in the shuffle, here. (Was also glad to see Sam Neill and Laura Dern back on board for film #3. If there's a fourth film, get them and Goldblum back.)

I figured I'd pass along here that it's been announced that Rocketeer creator Dave Stevens has passed away due to leukemia

The Rocketeer, Dave Stevens' opus, is finally collected in one volume! The Rocketeer and The Rocketeer: Cliff's New York Adventure are being completely re-colored, as per Dave Stevens' wishes, by renowned colorist Laura Martin. The best possible reproduction and the highest production values will ensure that this is the definitive Rocketeer collection.
