The original was a very simple premise: basically "10 little Indians" trapped on a spaceship with a completely UNKNOWN monster. It's so basic and yet so brilliant it is almost hard to screw it up. Aliens was smart enough to take a slightly new direction, and I completely tip my hat to James Cameron for giving us "more Aliens" and an original storyline instead of rehashing Alien again as so many sequels seem to do. After that, nothing really original has been done with the series. Story wise, Alien 3 had nothing going for it. Great setting, good basic idea.... but it was executed very poorly in the end result. By all accounts, David Fincher's hands were really tied while trying to make Alien 3, and he wasn't able to make the movie he really wanted to make. It shows.

The death of Ripley is a final rest and a great end for such a great character. What was to be her fate, flying from planet to planet fighting Aliens? That sounds like a terrible life to wish on anyone. Jon's point about "How many times do we wanna watch the same movie?" is well taken. 3 is not perfect but the story arc is acceptable to me. 4 is just so unlike the rest of them that it feels like a spoof.

Uncle Bingo wrote: I disagree that it was "brave" to kill off Hicks and Newt. What's the point of them surviving Aliens? It makes the finale of that movie a waste. Ripley goes through an hour of saving Newt and she is killed off before we can say goodbye? Thematic letdown - and a big reason why Alien 3 was a downer and was a failure. If they wanted to kill them off, do it IN THE STORY, make it mean something - not just wipe them out in the first 10 minutes of the film. Glad you got attached to the characters - sorry though!
