Did some thinking about these two films and have come to the conclusion that Maleva, rather then being the kind old gypsy woman, mother figure, to Lawrence Talbot, was in reality a spiteful witch who was behind the whole werewolf curse afflicting our poor Wolf man. Look at the facts, 1.) Maleva's name is a derivative of the word malevolent which means "having, showing, or arising from intense often vicious ill will, spite, or hatred". 2.) Gypsys have been depicted in fiction as consorting with SATAN and having the ability through black magic to place curses on people. see STEVEN KING'S THINNER. 3.) Maleva was aware of her "son's" curse and yet she allowed him to interact with potential victims, when she could have ended his curse with a silver bullet or some other silver weapon. 4.) Her "mothering" of Larry Talbot consisted of touching him when she asked him to show her the wound and thereby transfer the curse to him, then "help" him in his quest to commit suicide. Not very motherly.
The next question is her motivation. It would have to be her intense hatred of non gypsys and besides, Larry Talbot was the one who killed her meal ticket, BELA. I just think that when Vazec called Maleva an "old witch" he wasn't far from wrong. What do you think?
