Jul 27 12 6:53 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	In ABBOTT AND COSTELLO MEET FRANKENSTEIN, DRACULA is clearly seen driving/operating a boat after he kidnaps JOAN RAYMOND. Since DRACULA had never, up to this point, been depicted as being knowledgeable about modern methods of transportation or even aware of modern technology, his operating the boat does come across as ridiculous. Maybe that was supposed to be funny, after all the film was a comedy, but the monsters were supposed to have been played straight. That bit was totally out of character. What do you think?

Just saying that it is a trifle ludicrous for a supernatural creature to have to depend on a method of transportation based in science. It comes off as funny, and not in a kind way.

Somewhere along the way, he learned how to operate a motorboat. He also seems pretty handy with all the lab equipment too. Clearly, Dracula is no Luddite.

I've seen the movie something like 100 times (or so it feels like). I never noticed Dracula driving the boat until maybe the 83rd time or so. I guess if I stopped to really analyze it, yeah -- it's kinda out of place. But so too is a lot of what goes on in "modern" A&CMF. In other words, it doesn't bother me in the least. "Guy named Squeamy got thrown from the fifth floor. He's deader'n a mackerel."

Dracula clearly knows his way around Dr. Frankenstein's strickfaddenoid generators during the prep on the Big Frankie operation, and he's hip enough to know the secrets of Frankenstein (if not do the surgery himself) and pretend that he's duded up for a costume party-- and presumably dance to 1940s big band music. He was smart enough to arrange clandestine transport of himself and the Monster from Europe via contemporary shipping methods. Baron Latoes understands how to reverse a blood transfusion. Christopher Lee's Dracula has a pineapple on the table for Harker. And you're worried about Dracula piloting a boat?

Jul 28 12 9:00 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Few thoughts: (1) I think of A&C as out of continuity since they make no attempt to explain the various monsters' revivals from their previous movies. The Set-ups are all for comedy. (2) Anne Rice's vampires' powers include the ability to pick up new skills instantaneously. Of course, Stoker and Universal didn't know this, but it could work for Drac. (3) I piloted a motor boat simply after watching someone do it. It's not that hard. Being good at it and precise might be another matter but Dracula could have supernatural hand-eye coordination. L'enfer, c'est les autres

He wasn't telleported from the past, like a cave man into a modern world, Hell no, he was here interacting to all these advancements while they happened. There are a lot of us "old farts" on this board who remember having B/W TV's, and computers were still basically science fiction, and if you wanted to se a movie, you had to go to a theater. Now look at us ! We know how to watch blurays on our high def flat screens, and host web blogs, and basicaly whatever the cutting edge technology is, we grew with it. Now imagine growing with 500 years of experience behind you...Drac could have been driving that boat with ease.....Hell, he's probably a member of CHFB ! Not only that, I even remember oil lamps in my grandfather's house in Brittany. My other grandfather (from my father's side) never saw a movie, as he died in 1896 (44 years before I was born). I got my first TV (B&W) in 1982 at 42. And I saw almost all of the horror classics in theaters, of course. But these days, I have more than 19,000 movies on video. Times change! Jean-Claude, O.F. Certainly he didn't have the exposure to a modern world the way you and I have by virtue of where he lived; and his nocturnal hours.

Hey, man, it's, like, dumb to think Dracula can like hypnotize Lou Costello from 100 feet away. That could never happen. In real life you have to, like, swing a pocket watch in front of somebody's eyes and make em go to sleep, then they bark like a dog and don't remember, that's the way it really is. This part was so dum. And what's with that magic electric ring, huh? Where'd he get that? Is he like an inventor or somethin now? Oh shurre. I didn't know he could invent electric stuff. And how come a little teeny zap from that ring makes Frankenstein wake up? In the real movies, they always need big machinery or a lightning bolt to do that. It doesn't make any sense. I think that film is so totally unrealistic, it's funny. Or not funny. In all the wrong places. And they don't even do Who's On First, which doesn't make any sense anyway. There's nobody with a nickname of Who, except the Doctor.
