Jul 27 12 12:24 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I agree, Johnny Doesn't Live Here Anymore looks like the kind of Hollywood 40's era fantasy that I like alot and I hadn't heard of it before. Also, Douglas Winter's soundtrack for a hospital stay was very interesting (and I hope he's recovering well). What I disagreed with elements of the review for the two versions of Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark. Specifically, I can't see what is so supposedly bad about the effects of the original TV movie (and apparently the new commentary by fans on the newest DVD-R is mostly about slagging the effects according to review). I think the visuals of the original are remarkable considering when it was made and the budget, and I vastly prefer it to the newer film's depiction of the creatures. So when I hear reviewers of probably my age and older dismissive of old effects work, I get a little sad, because to me it's a limited way to view entertainments from the past. For whatever reasons, I can usually get into effects and appreciate what the filmmakers were trying to do in older film formats (and even have more tolerance of CGI than evidenced by many in new films), and I wish that were the norm rather than negatively viewing the past based on the present. It wasn't my intent to trash the '73 film because, in fact, I have a great feeling of nostalgia for it. I still feel the miniature effects are well done. My major criticism is that the goblins are shown a little too much for my own comfort. The more we see them, the more they lose their power to chill. I'd have preferred a more subtle approach. Coincidentally I feel the same way about the remake.

Frankly, most of the DS profiles the mags did over the past spring in the run-up to the Burton/Depp production left me distinctly uninterested, but as soon as I heard about this round table, I knew that reading it, and poring over what is bound to be a fabulous layout, would be a major thrill (having been a fan of the series since 1968). I have been thinking of revisiting Don't be afraid of the dark. I watched the original broadcast, aged 14 I believe, and it gave me nightmares. H.

I have started reading the DS roundtable and am really enjoying it. My one complaint thus far is that I don't see any photo at all of Thayer David. Granted, the cast of recurrent players was substantial and David had several periods of hiatus from the series, but he was in the very first episode I watched (June '68) and I've always thought his unique presence and vocal talents did a great deal to make DS stand out. Also thought Louis Edmonds deserved a little more credit for making the characterization of Roger a little more layered than the analysis here would have one thing. And Joan Bennett could be glacial, but she could also be warm, vivacious, riddled with anxiety, and extremely shrewd as Elizabeth. Still, the publication of this round table is, to me, a remarkable event in the history of DS press and media coverage. These 30 pages must surely constitute one of the most nuanced considerations of the actual series, as opposed to its marketing profile, ever seen in print. I look forward to finishing the profile and I think other veteran, serious fans of the program will enjoy it. H.

Aug 8 12 5:58 PM Burgomaster Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Roundtables are an exceedingly hard thing to pull off -- not everything everyone says is equally interesting and the Dark Shadows discussion was done by e-mail, which can lead to intellectual setpieces rather than true give and take. So it is remarkable just how engaging and interesting these dozens of pages are. Tim keeps everyone on topic, the discussion rarely wanders and the reader comes away with a much deeper appreciation of the work and the actors. Great job editing and orchestrating.

Maybe Joe May wasn't the right one for such light material, even with his limited ability with English, he did great work on his two Vincent Price films at Universal. However, I must say that Simone Simon was quite captivating in her role, and James Ellison, about to descend to B westerns, acquits himself nicely. They make one want to root for the film, but if it were on tonight, I'd be reaching for something from my own collection. Rondo Hatton has a bit.
