Oct 8 12 1:43 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I love Toler in the role, but Oland is my favorite. Just something about his portrayal that resonates with me, and every time I see an Oland film, like the CC IN EGYPT that aired recently on TCM, I'm reminded of just how incredibly he nails the part. He also seems a bit more amiable, generally, than Toler, which I like as well, but don't mess with him, he has a bead on things but keeps it very subtle. All that said, I love the Toler films, and as has been mentioned, some of the Fox Toler films rank up with the best of the film series.

Mr. "O", definitely DID have the "inner spirit". Why else would Keye Luke call the man "Honourable Pop" until the day he died? "E" Your Signature ... "....I do hope he won't upset Henry..."

A fellow at wikipedia has done research going back generations and concluded that Oland was Sami. Sami--I wasn't familiar with this term, but it is an indigeous people of the the northern regions of Scandanavia and Russia north of St Petersburg. They are sometimes called Lapps, but do not like that term. Their origins are cloudy, but they are pre-European meaning they go back before most of the modern European stock. They seem to have some roots, now confirmed with DNA, in Asia While some Sami are blonde, reflecting mixing with Euro races, some others, such as Oland, are "indistinguisable from East Asians, indigenous Siberians, or Inuit." **I am no expert on this sort of thing, but as a Sami, or at least part-Sami, Oland was a member of a minority group, not a mainstream European, with Asian origins. (and like I say, I know nothing of these matters, but it sounds like he was like an Eskimo or other Native American, only of the Swedish indigenous peoples)
