I tend to think in literary terms. Of course, while many of the "classic monsters" debuted in prose, later prominent horror properties did not (Imhotep, King Kong, the Wolfman and the Creature from the Black Lagoon; in later decades Michael Myers, the Tall Man (Morningside), etc.).
 

Trying to track literary monsters, not folkloric monsters. Note the monsters listed above, aside from the ones created for films. Monsters from folklore and mythology I will leave out. So, Pazzuzu, Loki, Medusa, etc. I will leave out.

a) What makes you think folklore is not a part of literature? Grimm's fairy tales were folklore, became literature once written down. At this point Grimm's fairy tales are literature. But, anyway, nowadays everything is written down. The oral tradition has all but died, therefore all movie monsters are literary per your definition.

------------------------------------------------Monsters created for film usually have not fallen into the public domain, or if they have, I know of few attempts to revive or remake them. However, if you do find an example of a public domain monster that had later remakes, please note this with a mention of their filmic origins. Perhaps the Blob might serve as a salient example?  

c) Contrariwise, if they are literary do they automatically qualify as classic, regardless of how obscure?
-----------------------------------------------Supposedly, the only fictional figures of literature and comic books known to all nations remain Tarzan, Sherlock Holmes and Superman (or at least they stood as such in the early 1980's/early 1990's). The only filmic property on this list includes Mickey Mouse. I will accept properties less famous than these big three and that last figure .
