I read it twice within a year I liked it so much. Wyndham is just... well, I like his stuff. He tends to recycle plot elements somewhat obviously. All the Kraken weapons make an oddly inappropriate reappearance in The Chrysalids -- itself an unfilmable book. Too many of the slier elements are based on the characters giving odd descriptions or interpretations of visual elements that would be obvious on film.

In Kraken, they are aliens. What's odd is that Kraken seems like the far easier movie to film, and the one with the most scenes of conflict. Granted, the downside is an almost totally opaque enemy who is rarely seen. (They tend to explode at sea-level air pressure)
