Jul 3 12 2:53 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I just came from seeing "Seeking a Friend For the End of the World"... and it got me to thinking... how many movies are out there, which feature the end of the world? I'm not talking about ones where some small number of people still survive afterward... like "Crack in the World" or "When Worlds Collide"... No, I mean movies where everyone dies at the end. I can only think of a couple... Beneath the Planet of the Apes This is Not a Test (although they leave it a bit open, depending on if those kids made it to the cave before the bombs went off or not...) Can you think of any others? "[The audiance] will populate the darkness with more horrors than all the horror writers in Hollywood could think of. If you make the screen dark enough, the mind's eye will read anything into it you want! We're great ones for the dark patches." -VAL LEWTON

No, I don't think so. I think we're supposed to believe that President Fonda's nuking of New York City to balance out the destruction of Moscow would be sacrifice enough. There would certainly be a mess of dead folk, but mainly only in those two huge cities.

To prevent an all out nuclear war, the president bombed New York City so the Russians would be satisfied and not retaliate for the bombing of Moscow. I read the book before I saw the movie. I know there's a crummy B&W workprint of it on Youtube, but this is supposedly the real deal in color, and HD. Oh, and "The Quiet Earth" fits I suppose... although it's possibly just flipping to a depopulated dimention of an alternate Earth... Jul 12 12 9:52 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	THE LAST WAVE is also a favorite of mine, I think it's a genuinely great movie. But I'm not so sure about it showing the end of the world. I didn't think it was really clear if we were seeing the end of the world, or the end of Australia, or just the end of Richard Chamberlain. For that matter, I was never entirely sure that we weren't just seeing the madness of Richard Chamberlain. Fantastic movie, though.
