I always loved how he was represented on the old 60's Spider Man cartoon,with that OUTER LIMITS style soundwave zig zagging across his helmet with every word he uttered and his showy tendency to appear and disappear in huge clouds of smoke. Always loved his pissed off stunt man gimmick and his bizarre costume. Mysterio has always been one of my favorite villains since childhood.

Jul 6 12 9:20 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Just saw it. Kind of 'Meh,' but not bad as reboots go and as a set-up for the Gwen Stacy story it was pretty good. I thought the crane sequence was very strained and 'America, F*** yeah!' where everyone basically pulls together cos that's what ( blue collar ) Americans do. We even get the shot of the flag to hammer it home. Too reminiscent of the 'pick a fight with one of us, you pick a fight with all of us' from Raimi's bridge sequence in his 1st Spidey. And the 'heroic' music in the sequence was kind of overpowering. Actually, I thought the music throughout was pretty forgettable. And the cinema bumped up the price by a couple of quid, so I felt kinda fleeced.

Jul 6 12 10:58 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Frankly, the thing that most stood out to me in the crane sequence was when I finally recognized the guy playing the main crane operator -- "Holy cow, when did C. Thomas Howell get all rugged and manly-lookin'?" I'd have to agree about the score. It was serviceable, basically gets the job done, but pretty generic. I could say the same for most superhero movies these days. GREEN LANTERN, THOR, CAPTAIN AMERICA, THE AVENGERS, JOHN CARTER, AMAZING SPIDEY, etc etc -- the scores are almost interchangeable. SPIDEY especially could have benefitted from something hipper, more unique, more apropos of his "outsider hero" status -- in my head I keep hearing a super-charged version of the 60s TV show sound, a weird jazz-rock-orchestral fusion. Jul 6 12 11:38 AM Burgomaster Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	The score sounded 'Star Trek' familiar to me, so I smiled when I saw it was by James Horner. I actually thought it was better than most recent fare. As good as super-hero movies have been lately -- and they have become truly superior in so many ways -- even the best of them (AVENGERS, especially), have completely forgettable scores. Compared to Elfman's BATMAN score or Williams' SUPERMAN, I can't remember the themes for any recent super-hero movies. Can anyone hum the theme from IRON MAN (no Black Sabbath versions, please), AVENGERS, THOR, CAPTAIN AMERICA, GREEN LANTERN, any of the HULK, X-MEN, FANTASTIC FOUR or SPIDER-MAN films? Of all the recent films, only the ominous background drone of BATMAN BEGINS and THE DARK KNIGHT stays in my memory at all. The best music of all of them is when 'Walk' by Foo Fighters comes on at the end of THOR. david 'Learning to walk again!'

When I hear "Shoot To Thrill," always my second favorite AC/DC tune, I now think of IRON MAN. That kind of irks me. My kids really associate AC/DC with Iron Man now. You're right, though, that the same composer did THE AVENGERS, and it just went in one ear and right out the other. << The best music of all of them is when 'Walk' by Foo Fighters comes on at the end of THOR. << Now THAT was a toe tapper!

Jul 6 12 5:09 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I went in to it last night very skeptical but walked out blown away. Two thumbs up. Like most my main concern was it just being pointless and boring. I loved and continue to devour the Raimi films. I just didn't think I was ready to be interested in a retelling of Spider-Man. Then I grew even more weary when I heard the movie spends a lot of time on the origin - that was exactly the stuff I didn't want to see again. But somehow the movie just absolutely nailed it. I never felt bored, deja vu, or a "been there" feeling. It is so incredibly different in tone and atmosphere it really stands on its own feet. It is darker than the previous trilogy - obviously this was made in response to the success of the new Batman movies - but it still retains a more light hearted Spider-Man charm. I liked the actors, I liked the Lizard, the fight scenes were amazing... After getting home last night I watched all three (!) of Raimi's trilogy (!!). (Yes, I watched four Spider-Man movies at a total of +10 hours yesterday). Although I believe the first Spider Man movie remains the definitive film for the webhead, I think Amazing stands alongside Spidey 2 and head and shoulders above Spidey 3. Was a reboot update necessary? Certainly not. But that doesn't make the Amazing a bad movie and it doesn't stop it from being more welcome (and different) Spider-Man action. And really, how many times was Batman restarted or rebooted lately (Burton, Joel, Nolan)? I was 13 when Raimi's Spider Man released in theaters and it was a very relatable film to me then. As a kid, that is part of what makes the Spider-Man character - he's relatable. The Amazing shows me how much can change in 10 years (and makes me feel old) - there is a new generation of Spidey fans and this movie is much more connected to the current crop of kids than Raimi's. It may seem like a short in between but times have changed. For the record everything about The Amazing reminds me of Marvel's Ultimate Spider-Man comic. Seems like that should have been the title if "The Amazing" wasn't such a sure fire blockbuster title. 8.5/10

But my absolute fav has also been the Spider Slayer robots. Especially the early ones which were big hulking iron robots with J.Jonah Jameson's face in the viewscreen. The Catch of the Day!

Jul 6 12 5:14 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Re: interchangeable generic superhero / sci-fi scores -- by way of comparison, just think about some of the top sci-fi movies of 1982. I bet most of us here could identify the scores of CONAN THE BARBARIAN, BLADE RUNNER, THE THING, THE ROAD WARRIOR and E.T. after hearing just a few bars of each. No two alike. Today's composers (and directors and producers) REALLY need to start thinking outside the box. I'm talking major rut here. Oh, and I agree with Taraco about Hans Zimmer being the distinctive exception to the current glut of soundalike superhero scores, but even his signature sound is fact becoming old hat / cliche, with his scores for the Nolan Batman films, INCEPTION and TRON LEGACY all starting to sound very same-o same-o. My verdict is that I enjoyed this one more than the first Raimi, and on second viewing I REALLY liked this one a lot. The crane scene. They knew where Spider-Man was going due to it being all over the news that a giant lizard, the same one that made headlines by destroying cars on a bridge and Midtown High School, was climbing the side of the Oscorp building. I guess they put two and two together. Giant lizard climbing Oscorp in the same direction Spider-Man is swinging, must be heading to Oscorp. My fanzine all about Rock N Roll: www.sonicruin.com

In my mind Spidey never did climb out of the wreckage that is The Amazing Spider-Man #38, I think you are referring to Spidey #33. I liked the movie, a lot, but still like the comics, especially the first 38 issues better. One more note, they don't really have to go where the comics went as far as Miss Stacy goes. But my absolute fav has also been the Spider Slayer robots. Especially the early ones which were big hulking iron robots with J.Jonah Jameson's face in the viewscreen. Haha those Spider Slayer robots were always on the creepy side,with the weird teddy bear antennae and J Jonah's leering face peering out of that tv screen. I particularly remember the 60's animated show utilizing the robot to a bizarre effect.
