I very much enjoyed THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN, which we saw in a nearly empty theatre at noon today (Tuesday, my holiday day off).

Without any spoilers, I'd say the main criticism will be 'why?' in that as has been widely reported, rather than just continuing the adventures of Spider-Man the movie starts over, including what many will feel is a needless retelling of the origin with the spider, Uncle Ben and all.

Perhaps the studio felt the first Toby Maguire movie is too long-ago for this summer's new teen demographic to remember very well. Or they needed to keep the high school setting to capture the 'Twilight' or 'Glee' demographic.

But as a piece of moviemaking, THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN is really top-notch. Like THE AVENGERS, it has a great cast, superb acting and there is real chemistry between a doe-faced Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone, who is especially spectacular.  Best of all, it is a simple story, not overloaded with pyrotechnics or 18 villains. It drags in spots, but when it gets going, wow.

And the 3D web-slinging is fantastic. You feel like you're swinging through Manhattan.

No, there is really nothing new here, nothing we haven't seen before. Some will feel the movie is superfluous.

But as a piece of 21st Century super-hero moviemaking, it is state of the art, flat-out exciting at times, and there are some very interesting nuances for Spidey fans -- one return to the original concept should delight purists --  and for sure it has a great heart.  I liked it a lot.

I think you'll like it, FB.  I bought #1 off the stands in 1962, rolled it up and put it in my back pocket  -- and still have it -- and know Spidey equally well. I found none of the film's changes a big deal. It is clearly the Spider-Man we know and love.

   In fact, the third Spidey movie, where Sandman is implicated in the death of Uncle Ben, was a far more disturbing twist than anything in the new film.

  Plus, there is a return to form in the new film that should have Spidey purists grinning.
