I'm wondering how many films & tv shows have been changed due to
some kind of political/social event that occurred before the film came
out that caused the filmmakers to changes aspects about the film, rename
it, not release it, things like that. I'd be interested to see what the
earliest examples are, because the earliest example I could think of
would be from the 1980's.
The list so far:
The Watch: The upcoming sci-fi comedy was changed due to the Martin/Zimmerman case. Originally it was going to be called Neighborhood Watch, so they shorted the title to try to lessen the similarities to Zimmerman being a member of a neighborhood watch. Not sure if any content will be changed or not.
Big Trouble: The Tim Allen comedy involving a bomb and a plane had it's release date changed and the press was scaled way down due to 9/11.
Greatest American Hero: Ralph Hinkley's name was changed to Hanley, then to Mr. H, before being returned to Hinkley due to the Reagan shooter.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer: An episode about a school shooter was preempted, then eventually shown with a disclaimer due to Columbine.
