Godzilla fighting other kaiju is what the Godzilla franchise it. Not counting the '98 film, out of a series of 28 movies only two are solo Godzilla pictures. People want to see Godzilla fight other monsters, that's the attraction. Another movie with just Godzilla would be boring.

That would be silly.  They paid good money to get the familiar Godzilla name, which they must have believed had some intrinisic value.  Furthermore, they've been paying Gareth Edwards, at least three screenwriters and who knows how many concept artists, etc. for several months already; do you want to squander that money by sitting around and twiddling your thumbs waiting  a year to see how someone else's movie does?  And if PACIFIC RIM does do well, you still can't get your movie out for a year and a half or more if you sit around doing nothing in the meantime.

And I really don't think that's as silly as you think it sounds Jameson. Yes, Legendary bought the Godzilla name because it's familiar and they believe it has intrinsic value. But movie studios pay big bucks to develop films all the time that then don't get made. Look at del Toro's Mountains of Madness. WB spent tons of money to have del Toro and Cameron prepare over a year's worth of concept art, scripts, line up actors, etc... and then axed the movie in the end anyway. 20th-Century Fox acquired the rights to make a Dragon Ball Z, one of the biggest and most profitable anime franchises ever, into a movie back in the 1990s and then let in languish in development hell for years until finally rushing a piece of crap out the gate in 2009. Just look at the Tri-Star Godzilla. Rights bought in 1993, original film suppose to come out in 94, paid Jean de Bont to direct, paid Ted Elliott and Terry Russio to write a screenplay, paid Stan Winston to do the SFX, even started filming part of the movie, and then axed it and sat on it till 1998 at which point it had a completely different director, writer, producer and SFX team. And in that case what made Tri-Star decided to license Godzilla in the first place; Jurassic Park. What made them go with Emmerich; Independence Day.  I totally believe that the top brass at Legendary are waiting to see how Pacific Rim does before they make a call on Godzilla. If PR shows America has an appetite for kaiju then they'll push Godzilla into production. And yeah maybe we won't see it till 2015, but that's Hollywood for ya.
