Anthony Quinn, seen recently in Road To Utopia and The Black Swan, lends weight just with his looks. Anthony Quinn Other favorites: Boris Karloff Mike Mazurki Jack Palance Danny Trejo I predict lots of big, heavy guys, broken noses and scars in this list. Some, like Jack Elam are fine, if just a bit too goofy looking to qualify, but a funny thing about these guys is that most have great looking smiles. Jun 12 12 12:17 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I guess, but I only saw him in those Laurel and Hardy comedies and he doesn't play a straight heavy so he doesn't seem so tough to me. There are a lot of rough looking actors who have a quality that allows them to play both tough and nice like Wallace Beery and William Bendix. I remember Bendix as loveable Chester A. Riley, but I saw him a few days ago on The Untouchables where he was very convincingly mean.

To me, the truly tough actor is someone who rarely played good guys. Lee Marvin was plenty tough looking, and was mean sometimes, but I more often remember him as a tough guy with some humanity. Charles Bronson also, even when he was playing villains early in his career. Compare Marvin's gangsters on The Untouchables with Henry Silva's. Silva was always just bad, no redeeming qualities. Marvin was the bookie being squeezed and double crossed, the bitter ex cop with a grudge, that sort of thing. You empathized with Marvin most of the time, Silva was just pure scary.

Jun 12 12 2:44 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Cagney over Bogart? Oh, I definitely think so. In this case, though, I'm not talking about appearance, but reality. Bogart was a child of privilege, supposedly the first to say "Tennis, anyone?" while dressed in spiffy whites on Broadway. He always complained that people wanted to fight him because he was supposed to be tough so he had to be especially careful when out in public. The only real fighting I ever heard of Bogie engaging in was with first wife, Mayo Methot. They used to slug each other silly. Cagney, though, was very much a child of the streets, a real scuffler from the Lower East Side. He was small, sickly as a child, but learned how to survive with his wits and his fists. Could be that Cagney's bulldog reputation is overstated, but certainly he has a much greater claim to true toughness than Bogie. As to which of them looks tougher -- well, probably Bogart. But, frankly, going by looks alone, neither of those little guys would inspire a lot of fear in anybody.
