Jun 12 12 1:16 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I vividly remember seeing BRAIN THAT WOULDN'T DIE in all its gory glory on a Saturday afternoon in the 60s. We figured at the time it was probably due to the fact that the effect of the guy's arm getting ripped off looked so phony that the censors just didn't bother snipping it. You could clearly see the shape of the actor's real arm under his lab coat and the "blood" looked like chocolate syrup -- but yeah, there sure was a LOT of chocolate syrup! FRANKENSTEIN THE TRUE STORY definitely startled me when it first aired. Not just Prima's beheading and the partygoer's blood smear on the wall, but also the closeup of the crawling hand's disintegration by acid. That was strong stuff for network TV in 1972. There was a TV movie in the early 90s called IN THE LINE OF DUTY : THE FBI MURDERS that featured a really violent and bloody shootout, when such things were still pretty rare in primetime network programming.

Jun 12 12 2:49 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I remember seeing a British (though not Hammer) film called either Psychopath or The Psychopath on a local station in, probably, the late '70s. As I recall, the weapon of choice for the first murder committed was an old-fashioned manual rotary push mower (!), and that scene was surprisingly bloody. But then, after showing the gore in the first murder, the rest of the mayhem was much more implied than shown. I don't know if the original film was edited that way or if some local cutting had been performed. Has anyone else seen the film to which I'm referring?

We had a guy at Channel 2 in NYC and for him that was a full time job. Channel 5 used to show THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY, sometimes editing for time period length. Once when they aired the film in late-night, as part of an Eastwood theme week, they put it back together in the wrong order and the whole scene when they are first at Van Cleef's outpost, was so jumbled even I couldn't make sense of it and I had seen it at least a half-dozen times already. I recall on time that Channel 7 aired NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD and the scenes depicting TV newscasts had a caption informing us that it was "a dramatization."

There was an embarrassed silence and little embarrassed laughter, even from the hosts. Werner said in this funny innocent way "Now, you KNOW I meant to say gosh-darned."

Jun 13 12 1:13 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Late '70s/early '80s in Chicago-- I caught a few minutes of this mummy movie where the mummy comes up behind a guy (I think he was a cop or a security guard), puts its hands on either side of the guy's head, and squishes it. It looked rather phony, but it still surprised me that it made it on tv. Anybody have any idea what this movie might have been?

Nor is it "Curse of the Mummy's Tomb" which also has a mummy head crush but done by foot and out of frame. What I saw was full-on see the face crunch in, blood running from nose and maybe eyes too. It was newer than the Hammer mummy movies; may have been dubbed too.

Jun 14 12 10:54 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Tumak, sounds like you saw Paul Naschy's VENGEANCE OF THE MUMMY. Once in a while, the Euro-horrors would slip by during late night showings. I saw HORROR RISES FROM THE TOMB when I was pretty young, and it was mostly intact. The scene with a head coming off a body completely took me by surprise.

(and was the one that had my jr. high school class buzzing for several days afterward) The very realistic "sawbones" scene at the start, wherein they get the arm for their experiments, the guy being crushed, the men suffering the carriage accident, and of course, Jayne Seymore getting her head popped off like a champagne cork... Amazing that stuff got by the censors of the day. "[The audiance] will populate the darkness with more horrors than all the horror writers in Hollywood could think of. Jun 14 12 7:47 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	One "gore" scene that always gets shown uncut is from, of all things, GONE WITH THE WIND... when Paul Hurst gets shot full-on in the face and falls backwards down the stairs. Later, we see the trail of (bright red) blood smeared across the floor. I think this is probably the first time in cinema history that blood was shown in Technicolor.

This was my original thought, too, but after reading up on it, Domenick is right with VENGEANCE OF THE MUMMY. Jun 17 12 8:02 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Quite an interesting thread. Two things come to mind. In the early 60's they showed "Return of Dracula" renamed "Curse of Dracula" on local TV. It was metromedia Channel 5 which is still around but is now a Fox affiliate. When we saw the blood in the staking scene and when he falls in that pit at the end with blood all over his chest, well in the early 60's, a real big deal I assure you..

Jun 17 12 9:16 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Elizabeth Montgomery naked and getting her face splattered by papa's blood as she axes him in The Legend of Lizzie Borden was pretty shocking stuff at the time it originally aired on ABC. An extreme case of a local station going plum loco with the censorship scissors was staid old Channel 13 out of Birmingham, AL. They aired KING KONG one Sunday afternoon and literally cut out all of the dinosaur footage, along with some big chunks with Kong. It wasn't to fit a time slot - they certainly left all that boring stupid mush (as seen through the eyes of an eight year old kid ) on the boat intact. This was around 1970 and it was my very first time to see KONG. Needless to say, I was one confused Monster Kid that afternoon.

Jun 18 12 12:24 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	My local CBS affiliate once ran ZOMBIE at 1am on a summer Saturday night. I figured it couldn't be THAT ZOMBIE so i stayed up late to watch it. I was already very familiar with the Fulci original having rented it repeatedly before the advent of affordable VHS tapes so i knew all the show stopping setpieces (the eyeball poking,the zombie vs the shark,the throat ripping geyser,etc). After the local station completely gutted the film more savagely than the zombie extras did anyone in the cast,it was almost unrecognizable and it barely made it through an hour and a half late night time slot. The extended action packed finale where the heroes smash,shotgun and molotov cocktail the living dead to escape the burning medical shack became a scene where zombies break in and the heroes run out the back door! I am sure members of the board who aren't huge fans of gore may have enjoyed it's toned down,old school voodoo zombie approach but for a fan of the original,it was a totally bloodless mess. Not so much gore,but i was always startled as a kid that CBS showed the majority of THE EXORCIST's vulgar bits (like the vomiting and the gross lugey she spits on the priests glasses). The dialogue was another story.
