Jun 3 12 9:44 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Liked him on HOGAN'S HEROES -- we even had an LP of the HOGAN'S cast (sans Bob Crane) singing WWII era songs -- thought he was funny and charming on MATCH GAME, got increasingly weirded out by him on FAMILY FEUD. Anyone remember his turn as a rock singer named Rick Jagman, hiding out from frenzied fans on an episode of LOVE, AMERICAN STYLE?

Jun 4 12 8:23 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	My thoughts on Dawson, that I posted on Facebook earlier today: I grew up watching Richard Dawson - first on Laugh-In, then Match Game and of course Family Feud. He was known for his humor and his impressions early on, but on the rare occasions he did get to act, he wasn't that bad. Of course, most of us remember him from Hogan's Heroes, maybe from The Running Man (playing a parody of himself in a lot of ways and a good exit role for him), but I still remember him clearly in a dramatic role from King Rat, which I saw once as a kid (and found confusing because it really was a DRAMATIC role). Sad to see another actor (and I'm going to use that term here, because I do remember him as such) from my youth go onward. Bye, Richard! (BTW, I did have to follow this serious dedication with one asking, "Why are none of the retrospectives mentioning how Dawson and his good friend Felix Unger were once slapped by Patton?" I don't think anyone got that one, though.)

Jun 7 12 10:22 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Here's one of those neat little chapters in pop culture history, and science fiction history, that no one seems to know about... One day, in the early '80s I believe, I had FAMILY FEUD on. (Yes, yes, in the days before twenty-four hour cable, I bet you'd be surprised at what writers and actors had on their TVs in the background, as they worked or prepared... Besides, game shows can be fun!) ;-) Suddenly, as Dawson was either doing the opening or closing, he TOOK TIME OUT, to talk about this great author everyone should check out, someone whose stories had something engaging and rewarding for just about everyone... He was talking about Harlan Ellison. I don't remember if Dawson actually held up one of Ellison's books... But whether or not someone likes Harlan--or his work!--this was an extraordinary moment, because it may well have been the first time such a MAINSTREAM performer, on what was then a HIT show, took valuable network time to endorse someone that in so many other corners, would have been considered a genre man. Amongst her adventures, she somehow met Richard Dawson and he gave her the remainder of his cup of coffee to drink, which she did (!). Wish I knew more details and context, but that's the story. On the same trip, she was in the audience for a taping of an ALL IN THE FAMILY episode. The one where the Puerto Rican activist gets blown up in front of the house. As someone else here noted, I thought he succumbed to that heart attack back in The '80s. Maybe the report said "heart attack" and I assumed the worst, or perhaps it was misreported. He sure kept a low profile! Loved Dawson's "Family Feud" and "Masquerade Party". Ahhh, the latter was canceled far too soon! I realize it was a rip of "What's My Line", but the makeup angle was nice. Did Dawson host another show called "Screen Test" or similar that also suffered poor ratings? I LOVED that one! I remember in particular one nobody who got to test as a werewolf! Great fun. Probably placed in that death spot of around 7:30pm on a Friday night, around 1975 or so. "Lord I love Spring! The birds, the fair weather, the new flowers. It doesn't get any better than this. HOLY CRAP! what's THAT?!?"

His wit and interaction with contestants whether on Feud or Match Game makes for great entertainment. I know many have become fans of him through Hogan's Heroes but i've only seen the show a few times. It's ok but I prefer watching Richard as himself. I saw his 2010 interview with the Archive of American Television and he made quite a few good pointers about the business. As far as kissing women on Feud?? He claims it was simply to wish them luck. Nothing more. Regardless it only added to his charisma. I know many have complained that he was egotistical and became a grump on Match Game but that's not how he should be remembered. Dawson was great for his wit and always wanting the contestant to be treated fairly. If he felt a contestant was being done wrong such as giving an answer that was considered wrong but was technically correct he would not hesitate to speak up. Here's his farewell speech on Feud and this is the type of person everyone should remember him as!! RIP Mr. Dawson.
