As for the medi-bot scene, if the claw had reached in and pulled out a beanie baby or an ipod, this would have been my favorite movie of the year.
Seriously though, I was medium on-board for this movie until (a) Guy Pearce showed up alive in that unforgivable old man make-up, and (b): the Engineer, i.e., the creator of man and most advanced being in the universe, woke up and started roaring and swatting people around like The Incredible Hulk.
As for this starting a new franchise, I don't see how a sequel to this would even work, based on where Shaw heads off at the end. Would it just be her, Fassbender's head, and a planet of living Richard Corben drawings?
And nothing against Rapace in particular, but I'm wondering if the movie might have had a little more edge if she and Charlize Theron had switched roles. Rapace seemed like a bit of a sap in some scenes, which is not totally her fault since the script basically gives her the same arc as Lawrence Luckinbill in Star Trek V. Theron in the part might have given the character a bit more movie star toughness to help compensate for the lack of sympathy her self-destructive quest eventually engenders. And Rapace as the cold, efficient company woman would have made good use of her nordic otherness and hard-to-pin-down accent.
