I actually might see it again theatrically, and I haven't felt the need to do that in ages. We went with 2D, as I didn't want the image quality negatively affected by the 3D process. Might go for 3D for the second viewing though. As far as something at end, I didn't stay for thru the end of the credits -- was there something additional to the very last scene before the credits? Jun 9 12 1:29 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Saw this tonight, and the feeling of other posters that this is good and placed below the first two films yet above the last two alien films feels right to me as well. It's a thought-provoking story at times, and other times characters do their best to put themselves in the worst possible scenarios, but there some gravitas here, especially in the second act. It does feel a little pretentious at first, but then the story gets going and I forgot some of the early stuff right away. Once some of the mechanics in the second act get put into play, there's a lot of stuff to digest, and I'm going to need the evening to do so, but I wish that the last two alien films had been up to par with this one. Gotta say that I was underwhelmed a little by the design. I feel that the first two films blow this one away, but it's a complex, interesting story. Enough for me to think about it overnight.

Jun 9 12 9:28 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I loved Prometheus. There is a ton of "alien action", which is (I think) what people were hoping for. Production design, effects, etc., all are top-notch. Fassbinder is truly incredible and memorable - up there with Rutger in Blade Runner. The story could have been better (seems characters just do whatever they want to do, which would not be the case on a ship like this). But -- I didn't really go just for the story. It's all in the presentation to me, on most SF/horror films. I love Argento's stuff up to the mid-80s as well. Jun 9 12 11:15 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	This is got to be the most frustrating film I've seen this year. The editing is VERY choppy. I'm all for a quick paced film, but this goes from A to B to E, in it's story. And there's a few characters who look like they have no business being there. WTH is with a geologist who looks, talks, and acts like he just got out of prison? After that wonderful opening, that bit brought the whole story down a notch. And a lead, very bland, scientist who looks, talks, and acts like a college freshman? I kept thinking Shaw's the real lead here, and this dude just hitched along because he's her boyfriend. Ugh. Back to the editing, there's a major scene, that's pretty horrifying, but then no followup. No reaction. Nada. And where does the beginning tie into anything? Yeah, I can connect the dots on my own, but I shouldn't have to. The writer, director, and editor are supposed to furnish me with enough information to do so. A beautiful film with stunning imagery and science that's very plausible. And a great score that matches the visuals. It's been a bad year for movie scores, but PROMETHEUS stands out, in that regard. And the best 3d, so far, of the year. The depth is fantastic, with a stunning opening shot in Nova Scotia that made me want to book a ticket right away. The starfields are mesmerizing. There are some great ideas and a decent connection to the events of ALIEN. But just when the moment comes when the pieces are supposed to fall in place for it all to work, it all comes apart, with an ending that requires everyone to do some stupid things. I came out, very aggravated, hoping that an extended cut is forthcoming on Blu Ray that will maybe balance things out better.

I didn't like Noomi's beau either, who seemed like he was dropped whole-cloth out of the whiney Vampire Diaries into Prometheus, but my brother thought that maybe he's supposed to be another example of people seeing what they want to see in something, one of the film's themes... like that Noomi thought he was a qualified scientist, but instead he was just a party boy hitching a ride on Noomi's star.

Noomi was excellent, smart and human and likable and able to convey awful extremes of emotion and pain. That scene in the med unit is certainly a standout, a call-back to John Hurt but unique and harrowing in its own right! I'm not sure all the pieces fit together and it might have gone on a beat or two too long. But what a pleasure to watch an intelligent film, mostly well-acted (don't know why Guy Pearce was cast in that role) and topped off by Scott's customary visual magnificence.

Leonard Nimoy, William Shatner and Orson Welles were all over the whole "was Earth visited by ancient astronauts?" thing as far back as the mid-seventies. As for the medi-bot scene, if the claw had reached in and pulled out a beanie baby or an ipod, this would have been my favorite movie of the year. Seriously though, I was medium on-board for this movie until (a) Guy Pearce showed up alive in that unforgivable old man make-up, and (b): the Engineer, i.e., the creator of man and most advanced being in the universe, woke up and started roaring and swatting people around like The Incredible Hulk. As for this starting a new franchise, I don't see how a sequel to this would even work, based on where Shaw heads off at the end. Would it just be her, Fassbender's head, and a planet of living Richard Corben drawings? And nothing against Rapace in particular, but I'm wondering if the movie might have had a little more edge if she and Charlize Theron had switched roles. Rapace seemed like a bit of a sap in some scenes, which is not totally her fault since the script basically gives her the same arc as Lawrence Luckinbill in Star Trek V. Theron in the part might have given the character a bit more movie star toughness to help compensate for the lack of sympathy her self-destructive quest eventually engenders. And Rapace as the cold, efficient company woman would have made good use of her nordic otherness and hard-to-pin-down accent.

Jun 9 12 8:10 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I felt the movie started very strongly, even though the story is somewhat derivative of what 2001: A Space Odyssey had already done, nonetheless the imagery was startling and the characters well drawn with two very good performances by Noomi Rapace as the Ripleyesque substitute and Michael Fassbinder as David, the android with its own hidden, perhaps sinister, agenda. Once the movie began tying the story to Alien in order to align that films iconic imagery with Prometheus' storyline is when I felt the film lost its way and meandered to a rather conventional action climax. Jun 9 12 8:28 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	SPOILERS! SPOILERS! SPOILERS! Just got back from seeing this (in 3D, which was nicely done). Was really looking forward to it, but came out somewhat disappointed - though it's still well worth seeing in the theater. Agree with most of Jeff's problems: the Guy Pierce old age makeup didn't convince- though that's not that big of a deal. His whole character could've been left out, though, and the film wouldn't have been any the less for it; his "big scene" didn't really go anywhere or have much "oompf" to it. Surprisingly, I thought some of the acting and, in particular, some of the dialogue was cringe-worthy. Both Noomi Rapace's husband/boyfriend(?) and the captain I thought were weak. Not terrible, but seemed to have wandered in from a McG or Paul W. S. Anderson movie. In fact, some of the movie had more of a W. S. Anderson or McG vibe to it than a Ridley Scott one. I don't hate those directors as many do - I think Terminator Salvation and AVP are fun B-movies. But they're not the world-class filmmaker that Scott ostensibly is. Kinda agree re: the "engineer" waking up and "roaring and swatting people around like the Hulk". Might've been more tolerable if we knew why he/they were (evidently) dead set on destroying the human race. They even have the lead come out and ask the question at the end: why first create and then want to destroy humans? Glad she asked it, 'cause I was wondering myself. Maybe the filmmakers don't even know yet... I do think this is a worthy entrance in the franchise though, and falls smack in the middle in regards quality (not as good as Alien/Aliens but better than Alien Resurrection and the atrocious Alien 3). Hope it's successful enough to spawn a sequel (which it seems to be setting itself up for).
