Usually I eagerly snatch up the import DVD of the latest Godzilla film, but I was so disappointed with GODZILLA X MECHAGODZILLA that I had to take a little vacation from it all.
However, last Tuesday I picked up the domestic disc of GODZILLA: TOKYO S.O.S. and was pleasantly surprised. It's definitely a step up from the last one. While the human B-plot was totally ho-hum, and the fairies were not nearly as charming as the Ito sisters, the special effects -- particularly those involving monsters crashing into buildings -- were exceptionally well done. There is a glorious shot where a mass of CGI rockets rain down on Godzilla from several diferent angles. Also, while I initially had no desire to see Mothra again (so, so overused), I had to admit this was the best looking Mothra since '64.
GODZILLA X MEGAGUIRUS is still my favorite in the Millenium series so far, but this one may fall in second place for its techincal polish.
