May 28 12 10:39 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Okay, it's not a horror pic by any stretch but it's a good-enough movie that I wanted to recommend it in a folder where this post would be seen. It's on TCM tomorrow morning at 9 AM New York time (earlier out on the prairie) and it's quite a good little (68 minutes) melodrama (despite the drippy title), with some "horror players" (Kruger, Bellamy) and a little pre-Code surprise. I saw it once, ages ago, and am looking forward to seeing it again: 9:00 AM Ever In My Heart (1933) During World War I, a woman suspects her husband of being a German spy. Dir: Archie Mayo Barbara Stanwyck, Otto Kruger, Ralph Bellamy. BW-68m

May 28 12 4:04 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	The Stanwyck movie following EVER IN MY HEART is LADIES THEY TALK ABOUT. Remember that actor Paul Kelly killed a guy in the 1920s and went to jail? Kelly's girlfriend went to jail for it too; and she later wrote a play about prison life that became the basis for LADIES.

Their synopsis is as follows: "A middle aged working man gets to relive his life and make himself wealthy." Interesting premise and cast, has anyone out there seen this one?

Jun 2 12 1:11 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Thanks for trying. I've seen Edgar Selwyn's SKYSCRAPER SOULS and THE MYSTERY OF MR. X and liked them very much. The former is one of my favorite pre-Code dramas, perhaps the ultimate Warren William cad. Selwyn's film THE SIN OF MADELON CLAUDET was satisfactory, but rather routine in story (mother takes the road to sin to ensure son's future success) and mostly of interest for Helen Hayes. Still, not a bad batting average for Selwyn, so I am curious.

Well, for the benefit of all, let me mention that GABRIEL OVER THE WHITE HOUSE gets a prime time exposure (on the East coast anyway) tonight (Sept 18) on TCM. Highly recommended, not necessarily as a great film, but certainly a most divisive one and one of the strangest to have come out during the Depression. Keep in mind that it was a Cosmopolitan production, hence it had the blessings of William Randolph Hearst. Sort of the opposite of a Capra film and there is some irony in that just the year before, star Walter Huston had appeared in what is considered the first of Capra's populist sagas in AMERICAN MADNESS.

I'm really looking forward to seeing this one again tonight, part of a whole night of Gregory La Cava films and no sign of STAGE DOOR or MY MAN GODFREY in sight. Not that I don't like those films, but the man does deserve to have a few other films played. Slangy wisecracks and gratuitous shots of Lupe's undraped curves abound. Also worth catching that night: THE AGE OF CONSENT and BED OF ROSES, two delightfully racy La Cava pre-Coders. Both feature scene-stealing turns by second female leads: Arline "Mysterious Mr. Wong" Judge in the former and Pert "The Original Alice Kramden" Kelton in the latter as two of the funniest trash-talking strumpets this side of Mae West. I've had 4 hours of sleep since Sunday morn, so I'm low on energy and have no recording facilities - something that will shortly be rectified as I've ordered a DVD recorder. I've seen BED OF ROSES, so I'll at least try to make it through AGE OF CONSENT which is on just prior.

I wasn't able to stay up for the whole thing, but caught GABRIEL OVER THE WHITE HOUSE, AGE OF CONSENT and LAUGH AND GET RICH. I have HALF NAKED TRUTH to see on DVR when I get a chance, as well as SMART WOMAN. I've seen all these before, so nothing new here, but they are all fun and all pre-code. I got a real kick out of AGE OF CONSENT.
