Partly because it has such a "homage" quality to it, there's really no way on earth I COULDN'T like it (even though of course it's based mainly on Gidget and not the other obvious beach series), but there are so many other things it has going for it.

Like Thora Birch in GHOST WORLD, she seems intelligent and oddly beautiful/charismatic/watchable. Charles Busch's script is clever and funny. If you liked this, I would suggest that you also check out his DIE, MOMMIE, DIE! That very Ann-Margaret-ish dancer during the credits is the cherry on the sundae.

May 28 12 8:47 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	If you're an "unapologetic" fan of that kind of entertainment, with or without a scrap of irony having anything to do with it, one of the pleasures of watching it is finding the inspirations for it outside of Gidget and those two Hitchcock movies. "Bettina Barnes" is probably PARTLY inspired by the celebrity hanging out with the surfers from films like Beach Blanket Bingo and Bikini Beach. And it took me a long while to realize it, but "Chicklet's" mother comes partly from the mother of the Susan Hart character in Ride The Wild Surf, who has an actual scary hatred of the surfers. Wherever the character comes from, Beth Broderick and the writers manage to make her pretty original, instead of just one more "early ' 60s mom" parody (which is good, since there are so many of those in OTHER comedies with that setting, and even dramas). As much as I dislike a huge amount of bathroom humor, and as much as I dislike really heavy-handed gay jokes, I somehow DO like the way this movie combined the two subjects with the whole "Provalone / Yo-Yo" sub-plot.

May 29 12 9:10 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I just saw it again last week and there's one visual joke I can't stop seeing (in spite of my on and off pretty bad visual memory), and it's one the the SMALLER ones. It's when Chicklet's mother is sharpening that knife in such a "lusty" way, and Chicklet and Burdene (sp.) give each other those worried looks. They're such UNDERSTATED worried looks, and it's for that very reason that the joke stays with me.
