In Utero was a slight disappointment, from the first listen in the music store (bought it the day it came out, at midnight... the store was opened at midnight just for that release.) right up until today. I can't quite understand how anybody that likes Nirvana could hate Nevermind, Carl, (maybe from overexposure but from the first listen?) but that's okay. Plenty of people in the Nirvana community like Bleach the best. I'll stick by Nevermind, even though nowadays if you say its your favorite it's like saying you like the moptop Beatles instead of the "serious" Beatles. When I was in high school I used to see a KISS tribute album in the stores, with Nirvana, the Melvins, Bullet Lavolta and others on it. I'm glad I didn't buy it then, as Nirvana's version of "Do You Love Me?" is not how I would have wanted to be introduced to the band. I will say we've been getting screwed by the record companies for the last 10 years. Nirvana is the last significant band, and their legacy has been handled the shoddiest. All the releases are victims of the loudness war, every re-release is missing key tracks, is oddly mixed, or has something wrong with it. The Nevermind 20th anniversary box set didn't even have "Sappy," the last unreleased Nevermind-era song. How do you put out a 4-CD box set of one album and not put the only finished outtake on there somewhere? And the Bleach re-release had the album and a live show shoehorned onto one measly CD. No bonus tracks at all... there's definitely one last outtake for Bleach, plus a few alternate versions and stuff like their Sub Pop 200 track that could have been collected. Instead they edited all the between-songs banter from the live show and crammed everything onto one disc... Mudhoney's reissue of Superfuzz Bigmuff had two discs with all kinds of goodies on it. It was fantastic.
