I really, really liked the new look of Godzilla in Biollante. He looked mean, but he also looked smarter, if that makes any sense. Some of the closeups were awesome.
Biollante was certainly an interesting foe. The first shot of her (?) in the water with the smoke rising around her was pretty neat. And later, when she came back with better weaponry, the fight scenes with "G" were highly entertaining.
As for the movie itself, I got lost a few times but was basically able to keep up with the plot. The finish, I thought, was kind of like, 'OK, this is the end. Everybody to your corners now.' But I liked the touch with the rose appearing during the closing credits.
This stuff, being all new to me, is worlds away from the old "Godzilla good guy" stuff. I think, for then, that was good. I think Toho made the right move as the 80s turned to the 90s, though.
