A lot of the motivation was confusing; the two werewolves seems done and done and done to me; and quite frankly there was something intangible about it that just didn't stick with me once I was out of the theater...unlike movies that I consider classics. I don't know what any of that means.

Mar 29 10 9:31 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I am very grateful that this "Wolf Man" wasn't handled like "The Mummy." The sheer absence of comic relief was a relief. It's the rarest of modern films, a Gothic period piece. I love the photography. The art direction is superb. I loved the stone circle, the brooding ruins, the manor house strewn with dried leaves, the crypt... I can't complain about the acting. The gore in the film didn't alienate me and probably was the only lifeline most younger viewers had. I liked it against all odds. Universal clearly didn't like it. They shackled it to a February release date. February is a time when there are apt to be screens available, but fewer people are going to the movies then. Obviously they felt it had no hope of competing for screens in the summer or holidays. So we're not apt to see its like again. I'm glad it exists as a period Gothic rarity and will look forward to the extra 17 minutes. Some of those minutes were clearly chopped out of Maleeva's tarot reading for Lawrence. A tarot expert is credited. There are tarot cards on her table. She references the cards. But there's clearly missing material. I'll be curious to see it.

Was he just evil? That's a weak motivation. 2. Gwen's motivation to kill Larry before others did? Why were the stakes so high? There are a ton of werewolf movies and you only point out two (three counting the new WOLFMAN) previous examples with dueling werewolves. So in fact, the SINGLE werewolf concept has been done and done to death.

He shackled himself before her image at each full moon for 25 years. The child saw what he did. Out of guilt he sought to exile the boy first to an asylum, then to America. I'm not saying a thoughtful viewer must agree that that is sufficient motivation, but it resembles what passes for motivation in many a Gothic tale. Gothic stories have a tradition of coming up short on motivations. He later attacked his son for the reasons stated. Gwen reminded him of his dead wife, and his son threatened to take her away. I wouldn't say he was just evil, but cursed and conscience stricken. Now, having murdered one son and passed the curse to the other, he has given himself over to the beast after 25 years of manful struggle against it. That's probably evil, but nuanced by circumstances. Rakshasa is correct in that the film itself offers Gwen's love and the redemption available according to Gypsy legend to those who die by the hand of one who loves them as a pretty clear motivation for her choice. I'm not saying it's a great film or that anyone should like or dislike it. That's a personal matter.

According to this link http://www.comicbookresou...age=article&id=24817 , the piano piece was an improvisation by Hopkins that Joe Johnston heard and decided to put in the film. Hopkins describes it simply as an improvisation with a "spanish motif" to it. I imagine that if you liked the feel of what he played in the movie, then it may be useful to look up other piano compositions with a spanish feel to them as they may sound similar.

Mar 31 10 12:24 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I think the film desperatly needed a rewrite, but it was aesthitcally a very pleasing visual experience. Johnston's eye is very reminiscant of what one might picture a Universal film to look like today.
