A Night To Remember is my favorite Titanitc film by far. As Cabmangray noted, the film plays well in the theater, probably better than on the small screen, and the feelings of loss and sadness in the audience does enhances the viewing experience, makes if collective rather than just individual. The budget was large but not of Ben-Hour-Spartacus proportions, yet this doesn't really hurt the film, as most of it takes place at night, much of it on decks or indoors, which doesn't require that much money. A lot of credit should go to the excellent cast, which really delivers the goods, unsentimentally, movingly. Kenneth More's charm as Lightoller gives the movie a kind od "leading man" (he was a top British star at the time) but it didn't really need one. The actor whose performance haunts me the most is Michael Goodliffe, as architect Andrews. His staring at the painting in the dining room, the advice the gives the young couple with the lifejackets, one's sense that the man's integrity won't permit him to survive, makes his scenes stand out. This is the definitive versions for me, enhanced greatly by its having been made when the Titanic was still well within the living memory of many moviegoers, admittedly senior citizens by then, but still. and the relative closeness of 1958 to 1912. Forty-six years. A long time but not that long, thus the manners and mores of Britain hadn't changed that drastically even as class differences had blurred quite a bit and the fashions had changed. That it was filmed in black and white lends it a timelessness quality. The action in the movie often seems so realistic as to be from a newsreel,--impossible in color--and the formality of human behavaior back then, so different from today, places it in a kind of Ultimate Proper Context historically in a way that color simply cannot manage. It's a great film.
