Maybe an example will serve. I just did this, so you can check (until someone responds)

I just added information to the first post of the Murder Mystery Series filmography thread... Just some notes about the DVDs and fixing up some mistakes in that first post. The last new post was on April 7.

The board handles this by bumping the thread to the top of the list, but it still lists the post from April 4 (and the user that posted it) as the last post. It does, however, change the date & time underneath the user's name.

While this can be confusing in some threads, it actually works out very nicely for a thread like the one in my example, since people get to see that the thread was updated. They can also tell pretty quickly that there aren't really any new posts (by looking at the time of the last post, which you've noticed). Yeah, it is kind of odd in some threads, and in others (like "Track the TV Episodes You Watch") you'll never know just which post was updated, but it's nice to get the bump. If they didn't bump the thread, noone would ever notice that I updated the info.

I think they made the right choice here, even if it could (theoretically) be handled in a nicer way. The thing is, most threads are just posts that never need updating--you add a new post retracting or correcting what you said before. But there's also a lot of threads that keep track of something in the first post or two. Threads like "Track the TV Episodes..." where people update ALL of the threads all the time are much less frequent, so they let that kind of thread suffer in order to make it easier to use the more frequent threads.

I just realized it's even more confusing than that. On the main page listing all the fora, the listed thread is the last one to get a new post and the time is the last edit time. It's exactly the same thing that happens inside a forum, except that it feels different because the listed thread isn't the first one you see inside the forum. It makes technical sense, but then, I'm a computer programmer. It's best if you just see what's happening there.
