Glad I'm not the only one who was put off. I agree, it was very derivative - of Hunger Games, The Postman, and many other post-apocalypse tales. Yawn. Add to that neither the acting nor the writing reeled me in.
It did make me think, though ... aren't others getting a little tired of this? We've got three shows running now with essentially the same kind of premise - the apocalypse has come and gone. Some band of intrepid survivors tries to struggle through, running through the post-apocalyptic landscape while dodging enemy forces - in "The Walking Dead", it's zombies; on "Fallen Skies" it's aliens and bands of dirty, smelly Road Warrior-rejects. Now on "Revolution" it the loss of all electrical power and bands of dirty, smelly (well, okay, just tough-looking) Postman-rejects.

As if the endlessly derivative nature of these things weren't bad enough, it saddens me to see so much of this in our popular culture. When you add in "The Road" and "Book of Eli" and the short-live "Jericho" of a few years back and now "The Hunger Games" ... I find myself thinking what a sad commentary on our times that the only future we can see for ourselves is one of destruction, despair, and horror.

Where are the "Star Trek"s? The "Just Imagine"s, that depict an alternate future - one where we do survive? Where we don't destroy each other? Where we do learn to confront our challenges and find solutions? I know, of course, that its just a reflection of the uncertain times we're experiencing, but still it's very sad. I've got nothing against post-apocalyptic stories (hey, I'm a fan of "The Stand"), and nothing against confronting the worst possible scenarios in fiction as a way of thinking/expressing about our fears and concerns. But, y;know ... it would be nice to see someone express some hope as well.
