It is clear from Burton's comments in general he thinks everything he does is some kind of joke. And he contradicts himself. He didn't think he was making a comedy, but he earlier said Dark Shadows the series had a funny vibe or whatever it was he exactly said. I think he looks at Dark Shadows the soap opera and Vincent Price movies and what attracts him exclusively is the camp aspects, not the horror. What attracts him to Dark Shadows is the same thing that attracted him to Plan 9 From Outer Space. He can't see the difference. He is not interested in scares or moving people with a dramatic story. He is interested in set design, weirdness; he is like a populist for the avant garde. He is at his best being visually imaginative, not making you jump out of your seat.
