I finally watched a Godzilla movie on DVD, and I've got to say it was kind of neat to see a crystal-clear image of him. Unfortunately, he wasn't looking all that great, but what the heck.

Anyway, the movie. Cockroaches camouflaged as humans plan to take over the world using an amusement park as their backdrop and monsters as their weapons. But I don't really want to get into the plot, because that's not why I'm watching these, anyway.

What I wanted to see is monsters! And I got a tag-team wrestling match pitting Godzilla and Anguirus vs. Ghidorah and this thing named Gigan, which has a birdlike face, a drill in its belly and hooks for arms.

The action, although it takes way too long to get to it, is pretty good, actually. I would rate this way ahead of Godzilla vs. Megalon in that regard. Aside from that, it is what it is, and I'm gonna keep plowing forward until I get to the end.

Opinions/knowledge are sought here:

1. Has Godzilla ever bled in any of the previous movies? I can't remember it. Man, he puts out some gushers!

2. Is there a more pathetic monster partner than Anguirus? My goodness, that poor thing got nothing but his butt kicked throughout the fight scenes. The only time he could get any licks in at all was when Godzilla had Ghidorah all tied up for him. When big G. was in trouble, he was no help at all.

3. This dialog between Godzilla and Anguirus... honest to God, letting them talk was bad enough, but at least couldn't they have spoken in Japanese and let us read subtitles?

4. Godzilla's fighting methods seemed a bit skewered. In all the time he was being pummeled and kicked and electrocuted by the two baddies and (from inside the tower) by the cockroaches, he never pulled out his No. 1 weapon: His firey breath. Did anybody else notice that?

5. This relates to the first paragraph, and Godzilla not looking so good. I can deal with the costume being a bit shabby. In fact, I rather preferred it. But, even in the 70s, they must have had the technology to make it so he didn't look like he was blind. His eyes rarely showed movement, and often looked as if they were just staring off to the side.

Wow, almost to the end of the original series. "Godzilla vs. the Cosmic Monster" and "Terror of Mechagodzilla" are all that remain. I'm actually looking forward to them because I haven't seen either before. I guess Megalon didn't do me in after all.
