I wasn't really sure where to put this, as John was a star of film and TV, and had a varied career, so I thought I'd just put it in here, following the lead of another great thread in honor of Joe Besser.
I really love this guy. He is my favorite screen "Perry White" of course, an icon from the famous TV series from the 50's. Especially in the early seasons, he really made you believe he really was the Editor-in-Chief of the Daily Planet, and someone who had no fear in getting a dangerous story.
In recent years I've become aware of his work as "Inspector Carr" in a series of mystery shorts made in the early 30's. If you ever have a chance to check them out, I highly recommend them. TCM airs them periodically. Donald Meek is his "sidekick" of sorts, and it's a highly entertaining 15-20 minute ride.
John never really made a star of himself until his legendary TV role, but he would show up everywhere, usually as a Judge, police officer, warden, or other type of public official. Always a professional, he made you believe him in anything I've ever seen him in.
Anyone else remember this man fondly?
