Could anyone in the general populace name The Black Widow, Hawkeye, Nick Fury, Thanos, The Red Skull, Loki, the Abomination (or the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy?) before they hit the screen? I remember, in my youth, picking up a ball that had fallen in mud and someone (not one of my coterie of eccentrics) asked me if I had bumped into the Swamp Thing. http://booksteveslibrary.blogspot.com/2008/10/my-date-with-swamp-thing.html I recall seeing these plates in a discount store. Monster Manor books feature a Swamp Thing (or It/Roger Kirk) counterpart. On recognition of the Red Skull; in a magazine about Saint Patrick's Day, an article's author recalled how his father worked in an ordnance factory during World War II, and during those days he had nightmares about the Red Skull's sabotage efforts directed at same. Not dissing your opinion-- everyone's got one, after all-- but I find DC horror-characters just derivative in a different fashion, not more original on the whole. The Marvel horror books stayed close to the template of the superheroes in that each issue usually featured a fight-scene. The DC horror characters tended, like the anthology books, to follow the example of the EC comics, either being very graphic (THE SPECTRE of the 70s) or very atmospheric (the Wolfman-Kaluta SPAWN OF FRANKENSTEIN). In the 70s DC hadn't yet chosen to follow Marvel's heavy continuity emphasis, but this changed in the 1980s. Alan Moore's SWAMP THING run is far more concerned with celebrating DC's heritage of continuing horror characters (the Demon, the Phantom Stranger, the Spectre) than the first Wein-Wrightson version ever was. NATURALISTIC! UNCANNY! MARVELOUS!

Mar 17 13 3:57 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Robert, My point was that more people can name more Marvel characters off the top of their heads than DC characters, therefore making the Marvel universe deeper, in my opinion.
