Saw it last night, and it's pretty impressive. It's a film with a huge scope that tells it's story pretty easily. Just a massive, massive film experience. A few GREAT gags at the end that had the audience in stitches. A lot of fun. Gotta stress that you should stay for the credits because there is a MAJOR reveal a few minutes into them, and there's supposed to be a post-credits bit as well, although the print I saw did not feature it. The stories from all the previous films came together pretty nicely, as well as creating some depth for Black Widow and Hawkeye, who has an unexpected story arc through the picture. There's a few scenes early in the second act that crackle as the team jarringly learns to work together and trust each other, and it pays off handsomely. Loki's a really, really interesting character who pays off time and time again, and while I have quibbles like Black Widow using a pair of handguns to ward off an alien armada,but there''s just so much more to her character and this film. She really evolves out of what comparatively is an underdeveloped character in Iron Man 2.

I think if you don't know much about the Marvel COMIC BOOK universe you might be a little lost, but the other films did their due diligence in setting up the storylines, and in fact there might have been a little too much attention to ramping everyone up with previously documented events that could have been cut to shorten the length of the picture, but all this sets up the massive last act, which is a comic book come to life. The one character that kinda gets the short thrift in my book might be Thor, who kicks major butt in his film, but kinda has to take a back seat to other, more popular characters. Oh, and I just can't get past the new costume for Cap, which I think looks horrible, but that and the other quibbles does not distract from what I think is a really fun film experience.

The one major negative I can think of is that the soundtrack is utterly forgettable, with no major theme established or carried through. It all feels like background noise to me, but despite the lack of memorable music, this is a big cereal bowl of summer entertainment.

The revelation of Banner's secret to containing himself is...a really profound moment, if you ask me.


On another note, I realize it's easy to take shots at the DC/Warner universe, and I've voiced the very points that you brought up many a times on this thread, to the point of annoying DC purists, and so I feel the need to state in the interest of fair play that I am a huge Nolan Batman fan and am tremendously looking forward to the DKR while simultaneously stating that the essence of the difference to me between the two universes is that the characters in the Marvel Universe are so deep and full of well-rounded, human arcs, whether they be good or bad, while the DC stuff really comes down to them running around doing great stuff while not touching us in a deeper, human way.

Just look at the films. Magneto is a holocaust survivor. Wolverine is an embittered, war-weary soldier. Spider-man is a confused, angry teen nerd. Add to that the entire self-described dysunctional time bomb that is the Avengers cast, which in hindsight is the entire point of that story, and you have a complete, unfair advantage in cinematic character development on the Marvel ledger.

Batman is a cool, dark, brooding character, Superman is still a symbol of purity that was released in 1978, while Green Lantern was essentially an emotional xerox of Downey's Iron Man. And who knows when DC can even begin to assemble a Wonder Woman, Flash or Aquaman feature. A point I made earlier on another thread is that the Avengers is made up of middle of that pack Marvel protagonists, while DC has to include its big three in any Justice League film simply to release a JL picture A FEW YEARS FROM NOW that could complete with this film.

And after that, what? Does DC break out a JL sequel while Marvel preps the Avengers third film and develops the Inhumans, the Defenders, a Doctor Strange film.

To me, Marvel has completely boat-raced DC/Warner.

I think even the most ardent supporter of the DC stuff would have to admit at this point that DC/Warner has, at the very least, a lot of catching up to do.
