My biggest concern over this is not that a good VAN HELSING film couldn't be made, but comes from Tom Cruise in the title role; incredible miscasting. Hey, let's be thankful. Coulda been Jack Black. Or Ashton Kutcher.

Sadly there are some scattered moments that are good, leaving us to imagine the things that might have been. This is a movie where the score outshines/outclasses the film. Check out the CD, as the music is worth hearing on its own.

Anne Rice liked him, after all. But if the movie itself is all right, I don't think Tom will the one to sink it. Today I saw pictures of him prancing around in makeup and fake tattoos for some new movie where he plays a rock star. I'll be avoiding that like the plague, but you never know... he could be good as Van Helsing. A perfect Monster has no end...

I agree - but I'm not so much opposed to there being action in my horror movies ( HORROR OF DRACULA, anyone? ). It's just that the action - and special effects - should be believable and not look as though we're watching some videogame! VAN HELSING looked as though it was live action combined with TOY STORY computer graphics! And there should actually be some real HORROR involved. Universal's recent WOLFMAN was done much better but, it was still a little too adolescent minded for my taste. I am so not looking forward to this remake. - GJS

I like Hugh Jackman, but I've never considered him "great" in anything. Very good as Wolverine and his role in The Prestige... I've found Cruise to be quite convincing in many, many roles. He's perfect in the Mission Impossible films. He was terrific in "Born on the Fourth of July," "A Few Good Men," "Rain Man," "Risky Business," "The Last Samurai," "Valkyrie," etc. He's a wack job in real life maybe, but he's been quite good and very effective in most of the films he's starred in.
