We're presently finalizing our plans for further 2012 releases, and since it's so hard to keep this stuff to ourselves, occasionally we will post about some of those plans so that you can keep putting those pennies into your piggy bank, or killer shrew bank, or whatever you use to protect your hard-earned currency...
As mentioned earlier, we'll be releasing the complete original DESTINATION MOON score, the 1950 classic by Leith Stevens. These are not the easily-obtainable re-recording made years after the release of the film, but rather the original music tracks, of which only a small amount were released on a 1950 ten-inch LP. However, that release was not only missing about half of the score, but what was presented consisted of various cues being cut-and-pasted into a "suite," with many individual pieces being truncated in the process.
But our latest coup will be the world premiere release of Walter Greene's absolutely mind-bending, brilliant original soundtrack for the 1957 low-budget John Agar classic, THE BRAIN FROM PLANET AROUS. For whatever reason, this small film is at the very top of the list of favorite fifties sci-fi films, especially of the low-budget variety, and it is in that lofty position for MMM, too. So it's with much joy and anticipation that we will not only be releasing this amazing and unique score, but that we'll probably be coupling it with Greene's music from TEENAGE MONSTER, a less-interesting film on all counts, but interesting for musical reasons. At this early stage of research, it would appear as if both scores were recorded at the same sessions, seeing as they were both made for the same production company around the same time. The music for each score is markedly different, although the 22-piece orchestra seems to be roughly similar. The score for PLANET AROUS is one of the most memorable ones in fifties sci-fi, with its combination of spacey percussive effects, jazzy brass and woodwinds, and memorable motif for the killer brain from space. There's simply nothing like it in all of sci-fi cinema.
While TEENAGE MONSTER's music isn't quite as inspired, how could you expect a babbling hairy "monster" that more resembles a hippie that smoked way too much weed be more musically inspirational than a giant, floating killer brain from another world? Still, much of the music sounds so much better than what you hear in the film, assuming you can manage to stay awake when watching the abysmal movie and even concentrate on the score.
The original tapes for both scores were locked away in a vault pertaining to one of my film music clients, and the sound quality is shockingly astounding! Prepare yourself for a classic monster music listening experience that will seldom be matched! And stay tuned for more exciting announcements about classic sci-fi/horror music coming later this year from Monstrous Movie Music! Exact release dates are not known at this time -- we might release the CDs in two separate batches, or else there might be one giant MMM upheaval coming around Halloween of this year, just in time for Hallopalooza in Burbank in late October!
