Many people despise the recent Downey, Jr. Sherlock Holmes films. However, tacky as one may find them, the Sherlock Holmes films that reached theaters from 1959 to 1988 in the US played as very tacky as well.
Hound of the Baservilles (1959)-alright not that tacky
Study in Terror (1965) while the film itself remained tasteful, though not historically accurate, take a look at that poster http://moviemorlocks.com/2009/11/20/jack-the-ripper-vs-sherlock-holmes-a-study-in-terror/The advertising campaign certainly didn’t help, trying to mimic TV’s campy Batman TV series: “Here comes the original Caped Crusader!” or adding exclamatory words to the poster such as “Pow! Crunch! Aiiieee!”
Private Life of Sherlock Holmes: Holmes feigns homosexuality so as not to offend a woman, male dancers approach Watson...........
Adventure of Sherlock Holmes' Smarter Brother: With Gene Wilder
Seven % Solution: Ends with a sword fight, not much of a puzzle, just an adventure story
Hound of the Baskervilles: Dudley Moore and Peter Cook
Murder by Decree: not too tacky
Young Sherlock Holmes: Proto-Harry Potter
Without a Clue: Michael Caine as a stooge to Watson, who pinches women's behinds and binge drinks
After 1988 and prior to late 2009, no Holmes film reached American theaters.
