I like OPETH, Borknager (well, a whole lotof European Power Metal) lots of post-rock (Pelican, Isis, even Agaloch). But mostly, I'm a prog rock geek: the usuals.... also British art/rock/pastoral rock: Barcaly James Harvest, the Moodies, the Enid et al.Great thread Jamesenstein!- Jay

I love the old school thrash from the 80s, my possible favorite thrash act being Overkill.I actually like alot of the older death metal, my favorite being the godfathers of the genre, Death. SYMBOLIC is my favorite death metal album ever.Being a thrash guy, have you tried Priest's PAINKILLER or STAINED CLASS, as they utilize alot of speed and aggression on those records? Dissident Aggressor from SIN AFTER SIN was, as you know, covered by Slayer on the SOUTH OF HEAVEN record.Venom! I love that band. AT WAR WITH SATAN is about one of the most epic metal songs i've ever heard! I love that record, got it on vinyl. I wish they would play in the states. You have the three disc LIGHTNING TO THE NATIONS set? That sounds awesome! That album is definitely one of my favorites of all time. The first three by DIAMOND HEAD are killer.Nice to see Budgie mentioned. They need alot more love, considering they are practically tailor-made for fans of Zeppelin and Sabbath. Budgie has a very impressive list of classics, my favorites including Napolean Bona Parts 1 and 2 and Panzer Division Destroyed! You like alot of good bands!

No, LIGHTNING TO THE NATIONS is a 3-disc set of NWOBHM classics. Check out the tracklist in the comments:http://www.amazon.com/Lightnin-Nations-25th-Anniversary-Nwobhm/dp/B0009F9O9O/ref=sr_1_9?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1335296259&sr=1-9(Although I do have like three versions of the Diamond Head album--the original, the late 80s remix, and a cool version with EPs and rare cuts added.)I love Budgie! They're worshipped down in San Antonio, where I spent a summer during college. I bought all ten original albums and then the reissues and live/rarities as they came out. I lived in England during my high school years, and bought a Best Of at HMV (popular music store chain) and was blown away by how good it was (it was a greatest hits comp of the third-fourth-fifth albums, basically), so I had to track down everything.Other recent purchases include: Grind Madness at the BBC - three disc set of Earache bands' Peel sessions. I already had half of it over various Peel discs for Bolt Thrower, Carcass, Intense Degree and others, but it also included Heresy, Godflesh and Unseen Terror... 128 songsNuclear Assault - Survive and Fight To Be Free - the CDs are rare but finally found affordable copies.Got these to shore up my Earache collection:Nocturnus - Threshholds - Finally found an affordable CDSpazztic Blurr - self-titledCarnage - Dark Recollections Marilyn Manson - Nobodies - Korean single with 10 remixes of various songs; Tainted Love - the single from Not Another Teen Movie, but it also has Manson's cover of the Mash Theme "Suicide Is Painless" which I didn't have a copy of yet. It's not all heavy stuff with me, though. I like 60s garage, 80s New Wave, soundtracks, rap... I saw the Monkees last year and buy all the reissues as they come out. I really like Ugly Things magazine and follow some of those bands/labels.

Not much into recent bands but I did like Wolfmother to a degree and also Rob Zombie. And this isn't counting hard rock bands like Bad Company,Ramones,The Clash,Foreigner,Kansas,Alice Cooper,Yes,Journey, The Cult(metal I know, but I forgot them) and a whole slew of other bands which can give you the idea that I like music A LOT,probably more than I should. I'm the one person in my circle of family and friends that everyone comes to when they want to know something about a certain song or group. But I'm sure there are people here that could put me to shame.

Hard Rock is also a subgenre, or more appropiately, "modern rock", that evolutionary step from it's creation.

I know "ROCK & Rock n Roll" are all encompassing... but I never heard Hard Rock was before.Hard Rock would be for groups like AC/DC which are not Metal but still heavy.

I particularly like Diamond Head, Trespass, Holocaust, Venom and Blitzkrieg. Some quick bits! 1) POSSESSED are incredibly underated in the genre. So many people who rave about Slayer and Venom often know jack about Possessed, who were always way more abrasive, raw and faster than either. 2)Metallica needs to pay Diamond Head some royalties because Kill Em All sounds like Diamond Head in every way but speed. Besides the covers, you can often pick out some incredibly familiar riffs and arrangements. Even mild fans of Metallica who hear them raise an eyebrow in the similarities. 3) My favorite band of the 80's thrash era is hands down,The Accused. Too metal for hardcore fand and too hardcore for the metalheads, they seemed stuck in limbo, but they had tremendous horror imagery, riffs to spare and my favorite maniacal frontman. Not many bands in the 80's would be covering the theme song to "Spiderbaby" when the film was scarcer than hen's teeth but The Accused did. 4) Another brutal, strange and relatively unknown band that i love is G.I.S.M. A punk/metal hybrid from Japan in the early 80's,their frontman was a real maniac and his antics are the stuff of legend. Listening to their "Detestation"LP now and comparing it to what was considered metal in the early 80's,you would be taken aback at the harshness and odd mix of raw hardcore and Maiden like guitar parts. I can't think of a more brutal vocalist from the period.
