The only folks that come to mind (& I feel reasonably certain that, as small productions, these films likely put the artists in a hands-on position re both horror & straight makeups) happen to be British: Jill Carpenter (TORTURE GARDEN) & Heather Nurse/Rosemary McDonald Peattie (DRACULA HAS RISEN FROM THE GRAVE). How to count the uncredited, behind-the-scenes people like Millicent P? And I don't doubt that there's a relative squadron of female monster makers from more recent films: maybe some of our current pro makeup posters can write in to enlighten us. PS Great foto find!

May 23 12 10:50 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Perhaps they didn't become ultra superstars but back on TROLL an animator named Gail Anderson assisted me on the stop motion. Linda Obalil helped a lot on the miniature stop motion effects for DREAMSCAPE and later was my effects producer on TROLL where her input was great in dealing with the film's producer Charlie Band. Linda also went on to run an optical effects company for many years (doing work for Roger Corman among others) and as far as I know she is still active in the effects business even today. My very good friend Sue Turner built the miniatures on many shows and I guess her best known effect was the saucer at the beginning of THE THING. Sue started out helping Dennis Muren on his 16mm EQUINOX when they were all teenagers. I also remember working with Janet Kusnick who was one of the matte artists on CREEPSHOW and Machele Moen who did matte paintings on GHOSTBUSTERS and too many other credits to try to list here. I know that Sue Turner has looked in here a few times but hasn't posted anything herself. "The saucer is made of ABS plastic to resist the 144 grain-of-wheat lights shuttered inside the chassis (to prevent 'hotspots'). The circulating light pattern is variable both in speed and intensity so as to give John Dykstra's Apogee FX house free reign to shoot at any FPS needed. The saucer is trimmed in etched brass for detail and the top dome rendered in hammered brass with an internal light. There's no 'blind side' to the model, as it pitches and yaws enough to display all its aspects in the opening shot of the descent towards the Earth's atmosphere. She is an excellent visual effects cinematographer who I remember from a number of shows. She completely slipped my mind, even though I've frequently rewatched her on one of THE THING featurettes talking about her saucer ever since the DVD came out--have toyed with the idea of taking an Enterprise saucer from one of the numerous TREK kits out there and use it as the basis for a custom built copy of the Thing's spacecraft. One of those proverbial "rainy weekend" projects. (Speaking of seeing people on DVD, saw you on the Ray Harryhausen Early Years/Fairy Tale discs over the holiday weekend.)

It's very nice to see an "old classic" you worked on with and appreciative audience but the best part was seeing old friends Bill Taylor (optical effects on THE THING and Albert Whitlock's cameraman) and Jim Belohovek who worked with Sue on the miniature ice cave and Bob Burns who owns Howard Hawks' Thing (that last part could sound a little funny, depending how you take it). Sue Turner is one of smartest, nicest and most talented people I know and remember meeting her the first time at Mark (EQUINOX) McGee's house when we were teenagers. I'm likewise happy to see Sue's name here and recognition of her talents. I think the first time I heard of her was in the pages of STARLOG when they included an article on the model work in 1941. When people discuss the great special effects films of the 1970s I don't think 1941 gets its fair due - the effects work in the film is amazing, with particularly outstanding miniature work. At the time I thought it something of an anomaly to see some women (Sue and Fran Evans) among the model crew and wondered if they were ever interviewed at any point for their take on working in a industry which was heavily male dominated. I'm sure the numbers have changed drastically in the years since, but back then they must have been but a few. Subsequently it was great seeing Sue's name attached to special effects for THE THING, DREAMSCAPE, the early STAR TREK films, and of course going back to EQUINOX. Was she part of the crew of David Allen's THE PRIMEVALS as well? Clearly an extremely talented individual. Some other names that spring to mind in connection with visual effects - in the STARLOG profile of the visual effects being created for JASON OF STAR COMMAND there was a photo of Diana Wooten setting up a model to be photographed, and I also recall Marcia Dripchak being interviewed in QUESTAR for her work as optical effects supervisor on BATTLE BEYOND THE STARS. Another name familiar from credits as a matte artist was Jena Holman.

I really didn't get to know her since I was busy on the stop motion stage and she was working on the space ship effects. By the way, all the space ship traveling mattes for JASON were done in the bi-pac Mitchell camera on the original negative, no post production opticals. I remember meeting Jena Holman too, perhaps it was on CAVEMAN. I think I recall seeing her also when I visited David Allen's PRIMEVALS effects stage. Jul 10 12 12:46 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	When Pat Fielder started screenwriting in the 1950s, she began with a series of monster movies (MONSTER THAT CHALLENGED THE WORLD, RETURN OF DRAC, THE VAMPIRE, THE FLAME BARRIER), and this got her a bit of press attention at the time. If there were women "specializing" in monster movies before her, I don't know who they could be.

I don't know if you'd consider them "specialists", but screenwriters Leigh Brackett (THE VAMPIRE'S GHOST, CRIME DOCTOR'S MANHUNT, THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK) and Brenda Weisberg (THE MAD GHOUL, WEIRD WOMAN, THE MUMMY'S GHOST and THE SCARLET CLAW) both had some notable horror credits.

Kay was part of the panel at Blobfest 2007, and the following is an excerpt from my article on the event for CINEMA RETRO magazine. Kate Phillips (nee Kay Linaker), the screenwriter of “The Blob,” admitted she never allowed herself to imagine that the popularity of the film “would last this long.” Phillips, now a relatively sprightly ninety-four years of age, felt the appeal of the film was in part due to the fact the movie placed common, everyday folk in what she describes – somewhat incredulously - as “real situations.” Phillips also felt that “The Blob” anticipated the zeitgeist of the nascent youth movement of the 1960s. In addition to her appearances in genre fare, the actress also directed episodes of ALFRED HITCHCOCK PRESENTS, THRILLER (even scripting one episode!), TWILIGHT ZONE, BEWITCHED and THE GHOST AND MRS. MUIR (talking about the Sixties sitcom, not the 1947 feature film).

She was billed as assistant producer, special effects assistant, and heaven knows what else on all the early movies her husband Bert made... and is interestingly totally absent from his book. I know there were ill feelings on his part after they divorced, but gee whiz... not one word about her in that lousy 100 page pamphlet. And now she's gone.
