"The Cabin in the Woods" is currently sitting at a very well deserved 93% on RT, critics across the board have been loving it. And I did too. Seriously I highly HIGHLY recommend "The Cabin in the Woods". This movie was, quite simply, made for monster/horror movie fans. It was made for us. It is amazing! Not to over-hype it but seriously go and see it this weekend. And trust me the less you know about it going in the better it is. "Horror fans are a particular breed. They analyze films with such detail and expertise that I am reminded of the Canadian literary critic Northrup Frye, who approached literature with similar archetypal analysis. 'The Cabin in the Woods' has been constructed almost as a puzzle for horror fans to solve. Which conventions are being toyed with? Which authors and films are being referred to? Is the film itself an act of criticism? With most genre films, we ask, "Does it work?" In other words, does this horror film scare us? 'The Cabin in the Woods' does have some genuine scares, but they're not really the point. This is like a final exam for fanboys." - Roger Ebert, from his review for 'The Cabin in the Woods'

Apr 13 12 5:32 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Rick, what did you do, read the only two bad reviews on Rotten Tomatoes? I dunno, Golem. That would be a coincidence, wouldn't it? I rarely visit Rotten Tomatoes so I dunno what goes on there. One of the reviews I read was Tony Scott's in The New York Times. It's not a slam, by any means, but it's definitely mixed. I could imagine Rotten Tomatoes calling it a positive review, but it seems just slightly more negative to me. I honestly can't remember the other review. It was something I read from an online link and I can't even remember where I found the link. But it seemed very much like Scott's to me. Kinda like, "nice try, good thought, just didn't quite make it." That's how I read them anyway. But the other comments I've now read and heard have decided me to go see it. Probably Monday. Maybe I'll do a CABIN/STOOGES double-feature. (By the way, Manohla Dargis's NYT review of the STOOGES movie was definitely positive.)

It doesn't always work (one of the characters reminded me of Shaggy from Scooby-Doo and that's not a good thing) but it's really a wacky, wild ride. Points to the director too for not going the easy route in the climax. There's a high profile cameo too in the finale that brought a whoop from the audience.

I know which character you're talking about when you say he reminded you of Shaggy from Scooby because I also had that thought and described him that way to a friend just moments after leaving the theater. However I thought that was a great thing, so to each his own.

Apr 14 12 12:40 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	CABIN IN THE WOODS is fun. Much more clever then scary. VERY Whedonesque, for all the Joss Whedon followers out there. Drew Goddard does a great job co-writing and directing, with some nice widescreen cinematography, especially early on, and the cast does a great job playing around with stereotype notions. It's got as much twists as a California mountain road, but I had it pegged not too far in and was right, of course. This, however did nothing to stop my enjoyment. I'll say this: Whatever you think it is, there's a very good chance you're wrong. Even quite a few of the positive reviews out there..I appreciate what they're saying, but I think they missed the real point. I'll also say this. I think most people on this board would appreciate many of the elements in this. I absolutely don't want to spoil anything, but there's enough "Easter eggs" in this to warrant more then one viewing. And...oh, just go see it! Go in "cold" and unspoiled, and you're likely to have a blast.

It's probably not as clever as it thinks it is and the performances are at best uneven, but I admired the ambition of its ideas and the finale is something fans will watch over and over and over on DVD/Blu-ray. Recommended.

I saw it last night yeah it has some funny moments with some twists, overall I didn't like it and wouldn't see it again. Might rent it when it comes out on red box to give it another chance to like it.

Overall, I liked idea of a movie combining elements of 13 Ghost, The Cube, Children SHouldn't Play with Dead Things, The Evil Dead, any slasher or occult film you think of. But I didn't lik the execution. It was too comic-bookish. It was like wathcing an exteneded verison of the late 80's show Monsters. or a long verison of Creepeshow episde; Which is a bit enterianing but lacking in any real quality. I don't know what to tell AlfredLynch. Both Whedon and Goddard have a background in comics, so that might explain it.

That would fall in line with the reception at the film's climax at the showing I attended. Most of the audience mumbled and a few voiced outrage. It's very much, to me, like The Mist and Grindhouse all over again. The "outsiders" don't get it. That's a shame because when something like this doesn't make a lot of money (it only did okay this past weekend), the "suits" are less likely to take chances and we get Transformers 4 and Saw 7.

Yeah most of the people I've seen coming out of the theater I work at, or the ones in either showing I attended, didn't really seem to get it. My friends and family who I've sent to it who are real horror fans seem to have gotten it just fine and loved it as much as I do. It makes me wonder if it would have done better if the studio had just straight up spoiled the whole thing and told audiences the plot was A B C and D. I mean it would have sucked for us but would it have helped the movie over all?

Apr 16 12 7:38 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Saw it today. And I don't quite know what to say about it. I liked it. I don't think I can be much more effusive than that. I loved the early scenes with Richard Jenkins and Bradley Whitford. Kinda like watching a really cute, cleverly-played "two-hander." Problem was, I hated leaving those guys to go back to the woods. It was nice to see all the referential moments and images, nice to be able to count them off in your head --"EVIL DEAD, of course...ah, HELLRAISER...haha, J-Horror..." etc. Probably much better for horror fans than others. You wouldn't have to be a real Monster Kid to catch the references, just somebody familiar with some famous horror images. But I got tired of the cabin and woods stuff. I know they needed to do it, the story is built around it. And it was well-done. But it didn't take long for me to start thinking, "Okay, I got it, I know how this goes, show me something new." And, while I thought all the hullaballoo toward the end was awfully well-done, and bloody funny, eventually I thought there was too much of that as well. And the surprise cameo appearance was no surprise at all. Not to me, anyway. That person is becoming the go-to actor for genre cameos. Just a year ago, the same person made a similar (but really much more apt) surprise appearance in another movie. Actually, I think the main thing that prevented me from liking it more was that it didn't surprise me. I can't swear to have seen every twist and turn before it arrived, but I had a pretty good idea before the title appeared on screen what general territory we were gonna cover. And we did. I didn't require a big surprise twist at the end, but the whole thing -- especially for something touted as being new and clever -- seemed alternately familiar and predictable. But, yeah, I liked it. Just no more than that.

I'm surprised by the poor exit polling as well, since when I saw it with a bunch of co-workers a year and a half ago everybody enjoyed it, both those who were horror fans and those who had zero interest in horror. I wonder if the problem is that the film is more clever than scary. People going in expecting a more conventional gruesome scarefest might feel cheated, I suppose. I suspect this is a film a lot of people will end up discovering on cable and home video, and will slowly turn into a cult favorite.

Apr 17 12 9:54 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Man, I can't remember having such a mixed reaction to a movie in a very long time. Perhaps in my entire life. I really, really liked the characters, the horror elements, the different twist given to the story and I thought the atmosphere was great. I thought the comedy worked a lot better than it should have, although I didn't laugh as much as many in the crowd. I thought the (original) monsters were quite effective and I thought they got the atmosphere of the "slasher in the woods" better than most actual slashers. However, in the end none of it really came together good enough for me to really like the film. I certainly respect what they went for more than I enjoyed the picture. The entire final act just became too much for me and it was pretty obvious what was going to happen. Yes, it's clever to have the tables turn but it just wasn't as entertaining as what came before it. It just seems like one of those films that keep trying to outsmart itself and became too much. The "ending" would have worked better as a complete film. Following the set-up I just didn't think it worked.
