I have virtually every Universal horror/monster movie on DVD (along with classics produced by the other top studios of the 30s and 40s) but that still does not stop me from often enjoying a television broadcast of these (mostly) gems. Case in point: TCM's Monday broadcasting of "Son of Frankenstein". Heck, own the movie on video, DVD, have watched it endlessly, but something about coming home from work last evening, seeing it listed on the TV schedule, settling into my rocker/recliner and watching it yet again put me into as relaxed a mood as if I were sitting back with a double rye and Coke. I guess that's why we love these films; they definitely are old friends and really can put us into our own comfort zone.
The cool thing is, after "SoF", switched to another movie channel and there was the second half of "The Creature Walks Among Us". Sat through that baby and went to bed feeling so relaxed and un-stressed that, my oft-times insomnia notwithstanding, I had one of the best sleeps I'd enjoyed in a while.
I dunno, make of that what you will. But I definitely feel there's something soothing about these wonderful films.
