Why did Universal drop the logo fanfare from House Of Dracula, Terror By Night, etc

Apr 16 12 8:57 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Well, Columbia did have a fanfare from 1929 to 1936 during the animated logo years. But it was individually recorded and interpolated into each main title. In 1936, Harry Jackson's fanfare for MR. DEEDS GOES TO TOWN was used for several subsequent features and short subjects. But from 1937 on, there was no official fanfare for Columbia. I always thought the studio missed a great bet by not using Dimitri Tiomkin's arrangement of "Columbia, Gem of the Ocean" - which he opened MR. SMITH GOES TO WASHINGTON with - as its official fanfare. If ever a studio logo and piece of music were ever meant to be together..... They are similar, Elisabeth, in both arrangement and meter, but I think it's fair to say they're two distinct compositions. But then, composers often "borrow" from each other, and it's possible that Newman did so from Mockridge's earlier score when doing "All About Eve," or even that Zanuck had specifically asked for something with the same "sound."

May 30 12 8:35 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Mockridge had some very identifiable motifs and chord progressions that he repeated in many scores. He scored several episodes of PEYTON PLACE and his fingerprints were obvious on the soundtrack. On the other hand, he gets credit for scoring THE SOLID GOLD CADILLAC. But the main title is very obviously George Dunning. The only real similarities between MIRACLE and EVE are the obligato tempi in the main titles. There are no melodic or compositional crossovers. And some of Elmer Bernstein's Western themes (such as THE SONS OF KATIE ELDER) are practically interchangeable with THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN. Bernard Herrmann did an ominous three-chord motif for PSYCHO that he later repeated in TAXI DRIVER. John Williams duplicates it in STAR WARS (as an homage, maybe) as Han, Luke, and Leia exit their hiding place after the Falcon has been searched by stormtroopers.
