I would draw special attention to "Island of Lost Souls," "The Black Cat," "The Mummy" and "The Old Dark House," and also regret the absence of "White Zombie" and "Mad Love." A fine list of the canon of classic horror.

Jun 23 12 8:37 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I wouldn't have The Mummy on that list, it's far from classic suffering from the same flaws as Dracula without the redeeming qualities in the latter, namely the first 20mins and the occasional inspired sequence, not to mention Lugosi, VanSloan and Frye. Replace it with White Zombie and move The Black Cat to no1 and your list would be better - not sure if M is a horror movie though, so maybe slip Mystery of the Wax Museum in or Doctor X. I'd even have The Raven in there, not a classic in the way the others are ie, groundbreaking, but in a lot more ways more entertaining.

Aug 31 12 3:18 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	There's the Roan restoration print on DVD. That one is pretty nice, but still flawed. WHITE ZOMBIE came mighty close to making the list and could be an alternate choice for some. Lugosi's performance and the haunting atmosphere are the main attraction.

Sep 1 12 2:20 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs actually carried an H for horror certificate in Britain in the 1930's! The Wicked Queen's Alter Ego the old Witch or Peddler Woman was in part based on Lionel Barrymore's old shopkeeper in The Devil Doll and was designed by Joe Grant one of Disney's Nine Old Men and a Jewish guy who based it upon one of his neighbours! I always feel there's an element of anti Semitism in the portrayal of the Witch's manner/mannerisms , however as it was created by a Jewish member of Disney's staff perhaps not!

UK TV clips of Snow White used to omit a sadistic scene where the witch kicks away a water bowl from a skeleton [an unfortunate victim who died of thirst as he couldn't quite reach the bowl]: this disturbing image is back in the DVD version, though. Thanks for the tip on the Roan White Zombie DVD, James: I thought this movie really creaked a lot, but there were nuggets of goodness scattered throughout..... 'the horror..............THE HORROR!' Sep 18 12 7:17 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Just like everyone else has said here, nice list - #1-6 are exactly what I would put in exactly the same positions on my own list! I would probably drop M on a technicality (1930, it can be argued, is really the last year of the 1920's) and drop VAMPYR (personal preference), replacing them with WHITE ZOMBIE and DR. X ("Synthetic flesh!!!"). I'd also drop HUNCHBACK as I don't feel it's truly horror (as you mention), and replace it with the exquisitely perverse MAD LOVE.
