Oct 4 12 1:19 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Another great list, I agree with #1, but think Frankenstein meets the Wolf Man is #2 ( not even on your list), I think Dracula's Daughter should be higher ( I think it's even better than Dracula) and I think Son of Dracula is a top 10 ( again I think it's a better movie than Dracula) Kess

Like those who posted earlier, I'm a big fan of ISLE OF THE DEAD; truth be told, it would have been in my top five, but your reasoning is certainly defensible. Well done, sir.

Oct 5 12 6:22 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Thanks, guys. ISLE OF THE DEAD is a wonderfully atmospheric little chiller that seems to get VERY little love. It's particularly odd, when one considers the star at the helm. For my money, this is one of Karloff's best horror pictures. Not quite up to THE BODY SNATCHER, a supreme horror film, that I confess, should have been lower. And yes, THE MUMMY'S HAND was actually my FIRST runner-up, considering it's about as entertaining a monster movie as you are likely to find! The perfect rainy day movie, right there.

Oct 7 12 12:03 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I would echo the general praise for Jamesenstein's top 14 but there are two favourites of mine that didn't make the list and have so far gone unmentioned in the comments - namely THE BEAST WITH FIVE FINGERS and THE MONSTER AND THE GIRL. Despite the cop-out ending, THE BEAST WITH FIVE FINGERS is, for me, one of the most atmospheric horror films of the '40s, with a wonderful central performance by Peter Lorre and 'crawling hand' special effects that were unequalled for decades. And THE MONSTER AND THE GIRL is a great mixture of horror and film noir elements with a sophisticated script and an exceptionally strong cast. I guess the fact that neither film has had an official DVD release means that they tend to get overlooked.

Well THE MONSTER AND THE GIRL will be getting an official DVD-R release soon by Universal so that may change some people's mind because I too think it's overlooked. Luis

THE BEAST WITH FIVE FINGERS is pretty good, but is also very melodramatic and outside of some creepy bits directed by Robert Florey and Lorre's over the top theatrics, it's not a great one.

It's been a long while since I've seen MONSTER AND THE GIRL, but I remember liking it quite a bit, and finding it pretty transgressive for the '40s. I doubt that another viewing would quite convince me to put it on my list, but we shall see. BEAST WITH FIVE FINGERS has always seemed silly with a few good bits.
