When I watched Thunderdome I totally got it. A friend of mine (who was a fan of the first two films) hated it, and I could not convince him it was a natural progression for the Mad Max character.
It's really the one family friendly film, so I put it on the other day.
There are very good things about it, others have aged, but mostly in the fact that Mad Max has influenced so many other films that it almost fails to feel fresh. The racing scenes seem almost slow, but manage to remain exciting. Some sequences remain pretty great.
I love the fact that Master becomes heroic, even after being presented as the villain originally. And even Auntie is not wholly bad... She has good plans for her little desert community!
One defect is that if the community is to survive it need women and children, which seem to be in short supply (as if by design, but apparently something that Auntie doesn't 'get,') 'cause even the Road Warrior presents us with the Feral Child, and the Pilot (here) manages to have a kid.
I love the way the kids remember the past.
Scrooloose is a very interesting character, that might not have even been there, but careful script design assigns him a role (something that was probably influenced by Lord Of The Flies.)
Kids swallowed up alive by quicksand!
Max, true to his western origins (The Man with No Name) fails to get home. Other recognizable influences: The Atomic Cafe & Peter Pan among others!
A very influential trilogy, although sometimes the influence has been in the thunder and not necessarily in the substance. I remember even stupid sex comedies ripping off costuming and design.
