The episode revolves around a murderer who is obsessed with Chaney and LAM, who is said to have the last surviving reels of the film. it is their recreation of a frame from the film,..nothing more.

Were they destroyed in other "fires" or did they just decay and were thrown out? If there is no record of other prints being burnt up what is the chance that every other copy just disintegrated?

Apr 13 12 8:00 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Prints are deliberately destroyed after their theatrical run is over. Let's say that MGM released LONDON AFTER MIDNIGHT in 200 theatres simultaneously. They need 200 prints. Each print is six reels. So they have 1200 reels of film of LAM. But MGM also released 40 other features in 1927. If each film was likewise six reels and released in 200 theatres, the studio would end up with 48,000 reels of film... just for 1927. Then comes 1928 and 1929 and so on. Where is MGM going to keep all this film? Consequently, the studios would only keep the camera negatives, a few other negative elements, and a positive print for reference purposes. The other 1175 reels of LONDON AFTER MIDNIGHT were destroyed (probably washed in a special bath so as to reclaim the undisolved silver). Decades pass, silent films fall into obscurity, and the studio eventually decides that they don't need even 25 reels of LAM. So they keep the six reel camera neg and toss the other 19 reels. Then in 1967, the vault explodes and destroys the camera negative.... Voila, the last surviving print of LONDON AFTER MIDNIGHT is gone.
