Aug 4 05 8:51 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	hi i kinda liked this film.i never saqw it in my youth but i like it.its not as good as the 1st godzilla film of course but i still enjoyed it for what it was.one minor defect i thought was in the night- club scene.the band members didnt have sheet music with th- em on the stage they were playing with out it.im in a band my self and we always have sheet music as we play the music.but still enjoyed this film reguardless. coonsanders ps i had the pleasure of meeting haruo nakajima recently. very nice man

Aug 18 05 3:25 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	This was the lost Godzilla movie stateside when I was kid in the early 80's, so it was the one video I begged my parents to buy for me when we vacationed in Japan in 1983. Consequently, it is the sole Showa era G movie which I grew up watching the original Japanese version. When the GIGANTIS version finally showed up on TMC in the late 80's I could spare it no mercy... wall to wall laugh riot. It seems almost like a parody of the relatively skillful dubbing of RODAN... I mean Key Luke just won't shut up in his narration! The WW2 era stockfootage added in is also a hoot ("The people rang the bell of Happiness!") and who can forget Dr. Yamane's utterly insane talk about dinosaurs... or fire monsters... or whatever. I haven't watched either version of the film in a decade or more... I much admire the effort in the original to show G's effect on normal working joes (Instead of the cast of scientists, reporters or astronauts that usually head up the showa movie casts) and some parts of the film are Godzilla at his eeriest (I love the shots of him standing motionless in Osaka bay). Can anyone here help me identify every bit of "NO BEDS!"

Apr 14 06 7:20 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	For anyone who cares, I wrote a brief essay on the differences between the music written for GODZILLA RAIDS AGAIN and the music used in the Americanized GIGANTIS, THE FIRE MONSTER. I think one of the reasons the Japanese version is so atmospheric is due to the brooding score composed by Masaru Satoh. Although brief, I think the score is every bit as classic as Ifukube's best scores for the series. www.mmmrecordings.com/Mus...antis.html

I didn't realize how many original scores to Toho's earlier films were basically trashed and replaced with existing American film music. Now I'm really anxious to see the Japanese versions of both VARAN and GODZILLA RAIDS AGAIN.

Classic Media is now working on a GODZILLA RAIDS AGAIN disc that will include the Japanese version with English subtitles, the Americanized GIGANTIS THE FIRE MONSTER, and extra features. The American version is unwatchable for almost every conceivable reason, so I guess I'm lucky Ifukube's music wasn't used, as then I would have had to watch it a few more times than I already did. The Japanese RODAN has some of Ifukube's creepiest moments, replaced by more Sawtell/Shefter music in the American version. If I recall, Masaru Satoh's THE H-MAN score wasn't changed too much in the American version. It's a real hodge-podge of styles, but one of the composer's best.

It's a fun film... and I wrote the cover copy for the Discotek DVD. :) Going OT for a moment; Discotek has been releasing some great older/more obscure Japanese films on DVD, including Toho's 1974 movie LUPIN THE THIRD: STRANGE PSYCHOKINETIC STRATEGY.This is a live action adaptation of the popular manga/anime character, and it's a fun and silly movie that captures the feel of the Pink Panther films. Media Blasters has released another great Toho film; the classic samurai film GOYOKIN (The Gold Shipment). It stars Tatsuya Nakadai and Tetsuro Tamba, and features an incredible score by Masaru Sato. All of these films are recommended for Toho fans. Keith

May 2 06 5:48 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I'm trying to nail down the differences between the Japanese and American versions of this movie. As nearly as I have been able to discern, unlike, say, VARAN (or even GODZILLA itself), the primary differences are in the sound track, with the original score being replaced and almost constant narration added. So there were few if any changes to the visual aspect of the movie, right?
