Now then, as one of the aforementioned Ape Apologists that Rakshasa mentions, I cut the time travel element some slack myself. While it's fun to think about the apes fiddling with the spaceship controls and piloting it back through time, I don't really think it's necessary. In fact, it could distract from the story at hand, and really belongs in a different kind of movie. I like the way it's just "spaceship -- time travel -- boom, on with the story'', a comic booky plot device that makes for a nice echo of the previous film, before segueing into the social comment and whimsical tone of the film that is to come.
