Mar 22 12 9:26 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I sincerely apologize if having derailed this fine thread through doubts expressed on certain points in Ape mytholog(ies), which hadn't entered my mind in quite some time until reading Gene's review here. Despite what warts there may be, I enjoyed the "Planet of the Apes" movies growing up. I first became acquainted with "Planet of the Apes" when my older brother bestowed to me his complete collection of POTA bubblegum cards, each card featuring a scene from the movie, all taped sequentially to the inner pages of an old paperback copy of "Search for a Living Fossil"- and that was the version I "watched" - my "Ape Bible" -before finally seeing the movie when broadcast on TV. Now then, as one of the aforementioned Ape Apologists that Rakshasa mentions, I cut the time travel element some slack myself. While it's fun to think about the apes fiddling with the spaceship controls and piloting it back through time, I don't really think it's necessary. In fact, it could distract from the story at hand, and really belongs in a different kind of movie. I like the way it's just "spaceship -- time travel -- boom, on with the story'', a comic booky plot device that makes for a nice echo of the previous film, before segueing into the social comment and whimsical tone of the film that is to come. Shhh .... I mentioned ape apologist, but I think I got away with it.

Not for me, anyway. Rakshasa said the fan explanation given for the time travel is because "they just could, OK?". All I did was point out that in actuality the movie itself does offer something a little more than just that. And that fans in the long-running APES SEQUELS discussion have come up with more than simple-mindedly replying "they just could, OK?". Hopefully we can move on, Hal. ? I agree with you Hal. Alot of the explanations or logic (plot devices) setting up the main story lines and situations in the Ape pictures are lacking, but it never really takes away from the stories themselves in any of the pictures. Well, for me anyway. Besides interesting stories, I love (IMHO) these pictures because of the characters. In these two movies you have some you love (Zira, Cornielius, Armando, Lisa), some who are extremely interesting (Ceaser, Kolp) and some you detest (Breck, Dr. Hasslien). The characters and main stories are the real strength of the ape movies not science. I also think thats what makes Beneath (at least for me) the weakest of the bunch because Brent is such a vanilla character and the first half of the movie is a basic retread of apes. I still love it though.

May 29 12 4:07 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	There is an execellent novel, the title of which escapes me, which depicts the events of the first Apes film through the character of Landon. In the epilogue of this novel, Milo discovers Taylor's spaceship, which had self-repairing capabilities and has now drifted ashore after refloating itself. It is from there that he and another ape or two begin studying the principles of flying it during the time period between BENEATH and ESCAPE.
