Mar 18 13 5:29 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	There's no 100% bad episode, every one of them has something good in it -- SPOCK'S BRAIN sports that cool 360 degree walk around the Bridge, for instance. OMEGA GLORY has many fine ingredients too-- everything mentioned here for sure, plus things like the chilling thought of a Starship Commander emptying phasers into swarming hordes of local populace (yeek!), and the fact that this was the 3-D View Master episode. But the idea of an independently evolving exact facsimile of the Constitution and the American Flag, Communists, Yankees etc. takes a real logical left turn. The "parallel" idea worked brilliantly as an alternate dimension device in MIRROR MIRROR, but without that kind of framework it's a real hard swallow, coming off more LOST IN SPACE throwaway than STAR TREK continuum. With a little more tweaking, it coulda been a real standout, albeit a preachy one. And yeah, this is maybe the oldest surviving episode plot out there, going back I think to the Captain Robert April/Christopher Pike days. It really contrasts with how Trek eventually developed.

Mar 18 13 12:42 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Hal, you're correct that even the worst episodes have something to offer - THE ALTERNATIVE FACTOR has that rear shot of the ENTERPRISE firing phasers that was never used in another episode. However, there are some episodes that I'm sure I've never watched more than once: THE LIGHTS OF ZETAR and IS THERE IN TRUTH NO BEAUTY come to mind. In my high school/college days I used to buy every TREK novel that came out, both the Bantam series and the Pocketbooks. There were some really well-written stories, but at some point I was reading nothing but TREK books, but still kept buying them for a while. I have a couple boxes of them in the garage but don't have the heart to get rid of them. Deep water is dark and restful and full of peace.

It's got the Vulcan IDIC pendant too. THE LIGHTS OF ZETAR has .... um .... Scotty's girlfriend in a clothes dryer. (Could be another close contender for 3rd season stinker!) In my high school/college days I used to buy every TREK novel that came out, both the Bantam series and the Pocketbooks. There were some really well-written stories, but at some point I was reading nothing but TREK books, but still kept buying them for a while. I have a couple boxes of them in the garage but don't have the heart to get rid of them. I could've written that sentence myself, LC! I like the James Blish adaptations very much. In fact, I read some of them like CONSCIENCE OF THE KING before actually seeing it on tv, which makes that episode a little extra special for me.

I can enjoy even some of what I'd consider groaners (most of 'em are in the 3rd season, but the 1st season had one, and the 2nd season had a handful as well). I'm a sucker for what "The Omega Glory" portrayed, even if it was cheesy and beyond believability but still liked it quite a bit. I really do wonder what would have happened if it had been the pilot? Probably a good thing it wasn't, because it might have made things more difficult to sell the series. Roddenberry had a fascination with parallels in time (we see it all over the place, and I think his original concept for ST:TMP was to be some kind of time story originally before it went the direction it went into. I didn't know Shatner wanted to remake "The Omega Glory" for ST V. That might have been more interesting than what we got. I wonder if there is a draft of that around somewhere.

I was gonna list THE LIGHTS OF ZETAR with THE MARK OF GIDEON but just went with GIDEON. ZETAR is just awful & Scotty is so out of character. He`s commanded the Enterprise when Kirk & Spock are in big trouble elsewhere, for crying out loud! Turn him into a lovesick puppy indeed! Other stinkers from the third season to me are AND THE CHILDREN SHALL LEAD, IS THERE IN TRUTH NO BEAUTY?, THE CLOUD MINDERS, LET THAT BE YOUR LAST BATTLEFIELD. Mar 19 13 3:41 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Roddenberry was apparently obsessed with one of the movies being a story he'd concocted along the lines of CITY ON THE EDGE OF FOREVER in which Kirk and crew had to do something extreme in order to preserve their timeline--in this case, making sure President Kennedy got assassinated! At one point I think even Spock was to be the shooter. I know Gene didn't get the respect he was accorded once Bennett and Meyer took over the movies, but I think his concept of Star Trek was really starting to go off the rails in his later years. Funny though, how Shatner seemed determined to do some kind of Roddenberry-like story for STAR TREK V. As for that IDIC pendant, Gene's insistence that it be written (perhaps "shoehorned" would be a better word) into the script for "Is There In Truth No Beauty?" strangely coincided with his marketing of the pendant for sale to fans. I think Shatner's contention was that Rodenberry objected to 5's script because it was too similar to his own rejected "The Enterprise crew seeks out God" script rejected in the mid-70's as a movie revival. -Clark
