Now this was a fair time before the creation of Superman. Sooooo ....... was Superman a direct and uncredited reverse derivation of JC????

The novel (I am finally reading it) does have JC jumping around 30 feet high and 125 feet long jumps (due to gravity - not atmosphere, though.) I would say it would not be much of a stretch to indicate this was so. Apr 11 12 8:38 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	A human being traveling from one planet to another, and then gaining some superpowers because of the difference in gravity, is definitely part of the JOHN CARTER novels. I am sure teenagers Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster were familiar with Burroughs' stories when they dreamed up SUPERMAN (as Alex Raymond most likely was when he created FLASH GORDON in 1934).

Apr 14 12 7:43 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Well, JOHN CARTER finally came to Japan and I've had a chance to see it. Overall, I really enjoyed it. I have a few problems with it, but basically, everything with the Tharks and Woola was gold. Lynn Collins as a reimagined Dejah Thoris (was she any sort of a scientist in the novel? I don't believe so...) was gorgeous, the supporting cast was good (Mark Strong especially so), the action fine if not outstanding. Taylor Kitsch was OK, but definitely a little too young for Carter. All in all, a good time at the movies, but not the home run it could have been. Still, the 11 year-old me would have instantly declared it "The best movie EVER!" Japan is the last big market for this movie to make some of its money back, but its bad luck and timing continues, as not only does it have to compete against new release BATTLESHIP (two Taylor Kitsch movies opening on the same weekend...weird), but also against 2 new anime films. The new Detective Conan animation had lines out the door; the theater we saw JC in was only half full. Too bad, the movie deserves to be a bigger hit. It's heart is definitely in the right place.

Apr 18 12 10:01 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	One thing I noticed was that the women were there fighting right alongside the men (mostly in that beginning aerial battle) and Dejah was a scientist, which was certainly a modern update compared to the books and the era they were written in. You just can't have women be the helpless spectators and prizes to be won anymore. It made me wonder how true that would be in a hyper-warlike society, but it wasn't a change I really minded. A perfect Monster has no end...

Apr 18 12 11:21 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	ERB's Jane Porter wasn't a damsel in distress, she wasn't a warrior woman, but she certainly could hold her own. I do recall at least a couple of girl on girl scraps. Can't recall ERBs exact words to describe her but they could easily have been "a worthy female companion to her jungle lord." Having Dejah be a scientist and a warrior feels perfectly in tune with the spirit of the story, regardless of deviations from the original stories (or the era they were written.) When Heinlein did the Barsoom update in The Number of the Beast, he did the same thing, Deety (D.T.) was a math wizard. All four main characters where not just adept at fighting (they were) but they were also all geniuses (in addition to looking good: Deety was stacked!) I'd be surprised if these new guys were unfamiliar with RAH's version of DT and JC. Later: Dejah actually is a scientist per the novel: "It was a scientific research party sent out by my father's father... ...to rechart the air currents and to take atmospheric density tests" Also: "...In time of actual warfare they (Martian women) form a part of the reserves, and when the necessity arises fight with greater intelligence and ferocity than the men."
