Mar 2 12 9:09 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I hold onto some things for sentimental reasons. VHS tapes are not among them, though there may be one exception: LET IT BE (Magnetic Video). This still has not been released on DVD, and it was the very first VHS tape I ever bought. It was in 1981, and I got it used from the old VIDEO SHACK store. I don't recall how much I paid, but I know it was double digits and between $30 - $70. Even if a DVD arrives one day I may still opt to keep the VHS because it was the first home video I ever owned. Mar 2 12 9:13 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I only keep a few pre-records that I cannot replace with a DVD or a DVD-r. I think I've narrowed it down to less than ten. So no, I don't keep VHS tapes for sentimental reasons, just practical ones. I do have a box in storage with quite a few self-recorded VHS tapes (maybe about 30 of them). Things like home movies and such that obviously cannot be replaced. In this case I am sentimental about the content, not the plastic cartridge and spool of tape the content is stored on. Everything else (appx 1000 tapes) started being sold/given away the day I got my first DVD (Quatermass And The Pit). I remember starting my movie collection around 1990 with one of those Columbia House deals... 7 movies for a penny... Jaws, The Fly, The Fly (Cronenberg), Hunchback Of Notre Dame, and... can't remember the others... I met Walter Shenson, the producer of Help and A Hard Day's Night, at a Beatle's convention in 1998. He signed both VHS copies for me. He talked with me for about 15 minutes about both movies.

Mar 2 12 12:51 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	As others have said, I keep the "home movie" stuff - 'cause even after transferred to DVD-r, these are the "negatives" for those. Beyond that, I keep some of the old package art, if it was cool or sentimental; in the early days, I'd hand color an admat if the box for a classic was generic ala Kartes, or poor ala Good Times.

I suppose I miss having that great montage that they had at the beginning of the tapes, but I think the whole thing is on youtube, so.... edit: I keep the boxes folded flat. It'd be ridiculous to keep the boxes in full folded shape and throw out the tapes....

Mar 5 12 8:47 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	The only VHS tapes I keep for "sentimental" reasons - well, mainly for aesthetic reasons - are the Universals. I faithfully searched out every title in the series (the now defunct Suncoast Video was my main source for the tapes), and made sure I sought out every single title listed on those blow-out cards inside. Such beautiful artwork. I know some people here - very reasonably I might add - couldn't care less about the packaging, but to me the slipcase illustrations of these vintage horrors were intergral to the experience of actually owning a copy a long treasured film... and as a memorable and inviting as a beautiful dust jacket on a favorite book. Of course I've upgraded nearly every Uni-film to DVD when offered, but the VHS series remains somehow more amazing to me... I never thought so many of these second-tier Uni-efforts would see release and, of course, some still have yet to make the leap to DVD or BR (in Region 1, at least): I'm thinking of the JUNGLE WOMAN films, THE MYSTERY OF EDWIN DROOD etc. Otherwise, my remaining official release VHS collection tends to things that 'til this day have only been offered (to my knowledge, and in NTSC) on video cassette: MONSTER OF PIEDRAS BLANCAS, INVASION OF THE SAUCERMEN, THE AMAZING COLOSSAL MAN, HOUSE OF BLACK DEATH, I WAS A TEENAGE FRANKENSTEIN, I WAS A TEENAGE WEREWOLF, HANDS OF ORLAC (Lee), THE KEEPER (Lee), VINCENT PRICE'S DRACULA: THE GREAT UNDEAD, IT CONQUERED THE WORLD, THE GHOUL (Cushing), and LEGEND OF THE WEREWOLF (Cushing). There are probably others that I'm forgetting, but you get the idea! I also still have a bunch of music videos featuring old Delta blues-singers and Bob Dylan, most of which were not made available in any other format.

Fascinating to witness the days when new VHS studio releases were priced at $80+ for the first few months. Not to mention the rare films that showed up in the bargain $9.99 rack which were constantly being returned as defective. And then the appearance of Laser Discs (I never bought into that format, but envied those who did). And the endless explaining to customers that the (then) new idea of letterboxed tapes was a GOOD thing. Later, working at at different retail outlet, I saw the slow, slow birth of DVD. For months, one part of the store hyped DVD player sales while all we had in the racks were bad nature and history documentaries. Then - BOOM - the studios finally made the plunge. OK...enough nostaglia. I've kept a few dozen VHS tapes just for, umm, nostalgia, I guess. Glad to have the STAR WARS widescreen set without the later CGI fiddling - but doubt I'll ever watch them again. Really wish I had bought the Kevin Brownlow HOLLYWOOD documentary series. I have bought a couple of Hammer movies on old VHS fairly recently, only to see them newly released on DVD!

Mar 6 12 5:33 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I still have about ten boxes of Beta and VHS tapes I need to go through to convert to DVD-R (mostly off-air stuff I taped that I realize I'm never going to get in the same manner as I can buying official DVDs of them; or shows that probably will never turn up on DVD). One I have kept for sure after that are sentimental things - first tape I ever recorded, a box set of Harryhausen movies that Harryhausen autographed for me, a Beta tape of STAR TREK IV signed by Shatner, Nimoy, Koenig and Takai. Stuff like that.

I read someone recently saying that the roaring mechanism eventually stopped working in those boxes, so maybe it's best left as a memory (when it worked!).
