Feb 26 12 12:57 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Twilight Time has announced their May and June titles on the Home Theater Forum. The big news for sci-fi buffs is the release on May 8 of JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH. No mention yet of extras, but if it follows the typical Twilight Time pattern it will have an isolated score and a trailer. The other titles: Fritz Lang's THE BIG HEAT (May 8 ); JOHN STEINBECK'S "THE WAYWARD BUS" (June 12); AS GOOD AS IT GETS (June 12). The fact that Sony is willing to license out a multiple Oscar winner from just 15 years ago is just another sign that they've given up on catalog titles completely. Apparently a movie from 1997 is now regarded as hopelessly out of date and something to be pushed off on another company.

Feb 26 12 2:02 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I saw this news earlier over at HTF and I find it extremely scary that a film like AS GOOD AS IT GETS is getting a limited released on Blu. I mean, this isn't SHAWSHANK popular but this film has had a pretty big following from the day it was released. Apparently it still rents well and it's often on TV (both TBS, Lifetime and another station). Not to mention it features Jack Nicholson and is an Oscar winner so it gets 3000 copies????

Yes, JOURNEY is Fox, but it's not as high-profile as AS GOOD AS IT GETS, and it's significantly older. Fox just released the Sousa biopic (I forget the title) and they have the 1950's TITANIC coming, so they haven't completely abandoned catalog titles. Sony will almost certainly release LAWRENCE OF ARABIA later this year for the 50th Anniversary, but it's seems doubtful that we'll see any other catalog product from them on BD. Feb 26 12 5:55 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I love the 1959 JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH, but much like MYSTERIOUS ISLAND before it, I already have it on DVD and only watch it apprx. once every five years, so without some seriously enticing DVD extras to sweeten the deal, I find it difficult to rationalize re-buying it on Blu-ray. It also features a wonderful story, a great score by a giant of film music, a good performance by a major star and a lot of fantastic f/x work. I would say this is probably a better known film than Mysterious Island as well, but you could argue that point. Anyway, I'm not going to even pretend there's any doubt I'll be cueing up for this with my track record of obsessive genre collecting... I mean, who would I be kidding, right? I'm with MaXof theMounted on this: JOURNEY has a lot going for it--a solid script (better than the ones Harryhausen had to work with), a good cast (again, usually not a strong point with Harryhausen), a great score, etc. I love Harryhausen, but you don't have to have stop-motion to have an entertaining movie.

Feb 27 12 2:51 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	JOURNEY is a good film worthy of a Blu-Ray, but this release worries me that Warner and Universal might start licensing their genre titles to Twilight Time and Criterion. As much as I like Blu-Ray, it's a medium I will abandon if every title I want starts costing $30-$40+. Outside of a few MOD discs I already have most every film I ever wanted on DVD, and DVD quality isn't so bad that I will routinely pay 3-4 times the price for an upgrade to Blu-Ray. It simply makes no sense to pay those kind of prices when so many Blu-Rays are available for under $20.

That includes what some others have already cited in terms of cast, score and script, plus the art direction is superb. I'm old enough to recall that this film in 1959, then The Time Machine in 1960 and Mysterious Island in 1961 were all "must-see" films for we monster kids in single digits. All three of them still elicit that childlike sense of wonder for me when I see them to this day. I'm not up to BluRay yet, but this is one that would be among the first on my list. By the way, ever since I first saw Journey on the day after Christmas in 1959, I always react to the Gertrude scene in the same way. Thayer David sees the duck walking away and I can't help but think of those cartoon happenings where a chicken hawk would spot a fowl and we next see his thoughts of the bird on a plate, all cooked and with all the trimmings surrounding it.

And this title, being scope will benefit even more from a Blu ray than ISLAND did at 1:66 and with all the grainy Dynamation shots. For me hi-def upgrades of favorites in scope are must-haves since I project. So how's about FIRST MEN IN THE MOON? I'm there! SAM33

Feb 27 12 6:15 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	AS GOOD AS IT GETS is sub-licensed from Sony, but Paramount who never releases much of anything lately, puts WINGS, a silent film on Blu-ray!? What's been even more baffling from day one is that in the UK vintage catalog titles have been coming out left on Blu-ray. Everything from obscure arthouse films to restored Hammer horror. How is it a market that small can release titles that small and still turn a profit? Surely, even if there is more appreciation for older films in Europe, our market would be just as profitable just given the number of consumers in the US? My hunch is that this simply means that there are profits to be made on smaller titles, but the studios don't want to mess with them, and would rather kink the hose to push more people to embracing downloads.

The flaw with that theory is that the studios aren't making much off downloads at this stage; no one has really come up with the perfect business model. So if Blu-rays of older titles made enough of a profit to make it worthwhile, why pass on that for the lousy returns of downloads just for the hope of spurring more business down the line? Grab what profit you can now. Besides, downloads are perceived as appealing chiefly to younger consumers, while catalog titles appeal mostly to older consumers. Are high school kids likely to download AS GOOD AS IT GETS?
